INSTEP Progressively Upskills Papua New Guinea Young Talents

25 energy workforce from Santos Limited, Papua New Guinea have arrived safely at Kuala Terengganu on 20 June 2022, full with excitement and anticipation for their 10-month Apprentice Training Programme at Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP).

The arrival of 25 technicians from Papua New Guinea at Sultan Mahmud Airport, Terengganu.

These learners are the 2nd batch of 10-month Apprentice Training Programme specially curated for Santos’ technicians to upskill their technical competency.

The training programme is customised and designed to produce skilled workers in plant processes, utility operations, equipment operations and product shipment. Learners are provided with fit-for-future technical knowledge and specific industrial experiences, giving them an inter-disciplinary base to foster interaction among the different engineering specialisations.

The learners come from 3 different trades: Production (14 learners), Electrical (6 learners), and Instrumentation (5 learners). The customised training programme inculcates blended learning solutions coupled with the world-class facilities and academic workshops facilitated by international-certified instructors in INSTEP, as well as embedded the occupational HSSE discipline mindset and culture.

Anchoring to our tagline at INSTEP ‘Experiencing is Enriching’, the blended learning approach involves theoretical (face-to-face) learning in classroom, hands-on training at practical workshops equipped with the latest technology, as well as guided On Job Training (OJT) at Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) at INSTEP.

During the Induction Day on 21 June 2022, the learners experienced the campus environment at INSTEP through a quick tour and briefings on programmes, culture, and safety. Besides, they also had their first try on Terengganu local food!

Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP said as he welcomed the learners: “Experiential learning at UDTP is crucial for our learners who come to INSTEP to upskill their problem analytical skills and to accelerate their technical competency to become a safe and reliable plant operator. UDTP is one of a kind, as it is a live training plant which simulates plant scenarios in the real world using non-hazardous materials.”

INSTEP Fosters Environmental Awareness Among Younger Generation

Kelestarian (Sustainability)!”

Bumi Hijau (Green Earth)!”

Enthusiasm and high spirits by Batu Rakit primary school students echoed aloud over the INSTEP hall during the Sentuhan Edu-Lestari programme last week.

Under PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd (PTTSB) Sustainability Framework, positive social impact is one of the key areas which is to be realised through high-impact Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programmes at INSTEP, aligning with PETRONAS aspiration to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) by 2050.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim said, “INSTEP supports the aspiration through its Signature CSR programme: Sentuhan Edu-Lestari initiative. This project, which involves tree planting and educational campaigns, is a combination of two (2) focus areas under Yayasan PETRONAS aspirations, namely Sentuhan Ilmu (Education) and Sentuhan Alam (Environment).”

INSTEP engaged with communities in the nearby area, amongst the schools involved in the project are SK Pagar Besi, SK Batu Rakit, SK Maras, SK Bukit Wan, SK Merang, SK Lembah Bidung, SK Darat Batu Rakit, and SK Pechah Rotan. The programme involved 160 sub-urban primary students with end in mind to produce Environment Sustainabillity Ambassadors from each school, who will be responsible to amplify the aspiration to wider communities.

Idris added, “There are limited exposure and awareness on sustainability in the sub-urban area. Therefore, we aim to create awareness and better the environment through education and hands-on activities for the well-being of current and future generation. These efforts are part of our commitment in complementing our larger goals for greater environment and sustainable livelihood.”

The main highlight of the 4-day Sentuhan Edu-Lestari Schools Visit to INSTEP was tree planting, in which a total of 80 mango trees were planted around INSTEP compound by the primary school students. This effort not only promotes awareness among young generation but also contributes to potential CO2 (carbon dioxide) absorption in long term.

Awareness talk on Sustainability and educational sharing on INSTEP Food Composter House were also conducted during the programme. Throughout the activities, the young students are educated on how to care for environment and effectively implement and monitor sustainable efforts starting today.

“In addition to conserving the environment, this outreach initiative is also a meaningful platform for INSTEP employees to impact their daily life and deliver positive outcome in preserving and protecting our planet. This also aligns with PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda on safeguarding the environment.” Idris added.

INSTEP Announces Continuous Collaboration with UMP in Technical Education

A Master Service Agreement (MSA) was signed between Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd (PTTSB) that owns Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) on 19 June at the state-of-the-art training centre in Batu Rakit, Terenggnanu.

The agreement was honourably signed by Vice Chancellor of UMP, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd, Idris Ibrahim.

Also present at the signing ceremony are Director of Centre for Strategic Academic Collaboration UMP, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Ruzaimi Mat Rejab, Dean of Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Prof. Ts. Dr. Che Ku Muhammad Faizal Che Ku Yahya, INSTEP Head of Marketing & Sales Division, Mohd Asri Omar, senior officers and guests from the industries, INSTEP and UMP.

The agreement marks a concrete joint collaboration between both parties covering areas in training, capability development and projects in which the utilisation of the game-changing live training plant at INSTEP, Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) is part of the value added.

Commenting on the MSA, Prof. Dato’ Ts Dr. Yuserrie said, “The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) has given a new impetus to educational transformation. It demands changes in the contents of education, especially in technical education.

“The strategic partnership between UMP and PTTSB has started with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2016, followed by a Mutual Service Agreement (MSA) inked in 2018, which saw the delivery of MSc in Process Plant Operation modules with experiential hands-on learning provided by INSTEP.

“Throughout the years, the MSc programme governed by the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology has gained abundant benefits from the undoubted commitment from both parties through various meetings and workshops, information exchange, promotion initiatives, as well as hands-on training for the lecturers and enrolled students,” he added in his remarks during the signing ceremony.

Meanwhile, he is grateful that the MSc in Process Plant Operation programme has obtained full accreditation from Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) in November 2019.

At the same time, both parties agreed to continue with the MSc in Process Plant Operation Programme

and to extend the collaboration in providing more training for industries including in areas of Robotic Technology, Drone, and Solar which UMP have the expertise.

Idris in his remarks said, “Our modules and programmes are designed to provide experiential learning at UDTP, with its ability to simulate real onshore and offshore plant environment. Learners’ problem-solving skills are put to test, and the lesson learnt from the hands-on exposure will prevent errors from happening when they operate in live plant in the future.

“In delivering our value of industry & technology-driven technical learning solution, we at INSTEP will continue to play our vital role in accelerating the competency development and customising training programmes, in line with our aspiration to be a progressive energy solutions partner enriching energy workforce for a sustainable future,” Idris added.

The continuation of this strategic partnership has nurtured a positive impact to the public, especially related to knowledge sharing, professional and capability development. It also focuses on several areas which include Capability Development and Training Programs, Competency Assessment and Management, Joint Training Courses, Training Facilities, Technical, Technology, Personnel, Familiarisation Programme and Software Support.

As learning and development is the core of our business, we always put Customer Centricity in our way to continuously upskilling technical workforce. Through this strategic partnership, INSTEP is committed in accelerating competency development through experiential learning to prepare competent workforce, enriching the lives of graduates for a sustainable future.

Prior signing ceremony, the UMP delegates had the opportunity to visit the INSTEP Hall of Fame Gallery, during which Prof. Dato’ Ts Dr. Yuserrie remarked his experience and impression on the INSTEP Wall of Fame upon his enriching visit to INSTEP.
