TEP Class of 2021 graduated! One Step Closer to Creating Values to PETRONAS Operations

On 23 May 2022, 35 learners celebrated their successful completion of Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP). This is a key shared success as they craft their pathway towards pursuing a career in the oil and gas industry.

The graduation ceremony was graced by the presence of Head of Asset Integrity, Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), Mr. Jamuri Zen and Head of Gas Processing Santong & Export Terminal, PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB), Mr. Fairos Roslan.

Mr. Jamuri Zen, Head of Asset Integrity, Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), is proud of the TEP learners for their endurance and commitment throughout the journey.

Mr. Jamuri applauded INSTEP’s demonstration of Courage to Act in making this training programme a huge success. “The past ten months of dedication and hard work must have well paid off. This shall be an unforgetting experience for all our learners in seeking and acquiring new knowledge from the experts of INSTEP. The passion and thirst for knowledge should remain and be brought into the real working environment later.”

Mr. Fairos Roslan, Head of Gas Processing Santong & Export Terminal, PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB) urged the learners to never stop learning and gain as much experience as possible.

“High risk operations are inevitable in all plants under PETRONAS’ assets. Hence, the demand for highly qualified and well-trained workforce is high to ensure the ongoing operations are performed safely and efficiently. INSTEP is undoubtedly our preferred technical solutions partner, by providing a sustainable pipeline of highly competent workforce to PETRONAS and industry operations regardless of background, gender or race,” said Mr. Fairos during the ceremony.

Mr. Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, delivered his appreciation remarks to TEP sponsors (MLNG and PGB) for their confidence in INSTEP as their trusted technical learning solutions partner.

Mr. Idris said, “TEP is a signature Bridging Programme at INSTEP. It is a pre-employment programme which aims to bridge our technician’s existing knowledge and skills with the required competencies in the industry. Technology of the energy sector is rapidly evolving – hence technical expertise is vital for our young technicians and engineers to ensure they possess the optimum knowledge, skills and capabilities.”

Mr. Idris also reiterated the importance of PETRONAS Brand Tagline ‘Passionate about Progress’ as he delivered his speech.

“Be proud to stand at your workplace later as one of INSTEP Alumni. The knowledge you gained today will generate tremendous values to PETRONAS operations, and these values will enrich your workplace no matter where you go,” he said.

This is the first batch of TEP under Bridging Programme at INSTEP, and it aims to produce competent and job-ready technicians in 3 trades specifically: Electrical, Instruments, and Operations. The programme was kick-started virtually on 26 July 2021, where the learners underwent theoretical classroom learning via Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) for 2 months before stepping foot on INSTEP Campus.

“Many of us faced challenges during VILT, and one of them was the internet connection,” said Olivia Hassan, one of the TEP learners when she was interviewed.

She added, “However, I am very grateful that we are able to be present at INSTEP physically after 2 months of VILT for classroom and practical training. Being able to feel and touch the equipment has greatly uplifted my learning experience.”

Mohd Zakiri Hassim wept tears of joy and gratitude as he represented his fellow batch mates to deliver appreciation speech. “I have no word to adequately express our gratitude and appreciation for the privilege and opportunity given by INSTEP, MLNG and PGB. The warm hospitality and care provided by INSTEP throughout the journey will always be remembered. Not to forget our instructors who have been dedicated and committed in delivering the modules and sharing their industrial experiences with us.”

Mohd Zakiri Hassim delivered his appreciation speech.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. There is no doubt in our mind that TEP is the stepping stone in our life to a bigger and brighter future and we are motivated to make progress in our career,” said Zakiri as he bowed to express his respect towards everyone who has helped them overcoming barriers and shaping them into better person.

Sense of pride and excitement rising upon the learners’ faces as they listened enthusiastically to the speeches addressed by leaders of MLNG and PGB.

Mr. Jamuri and Mr. Fairos presented the certificates of completion to all learners.

Complemented with world-class training facilities and industry-experienced instructors, TEP is a comprehensive pre-employment programme designed by INSTEP to produce job-ready technicians with the essential technical competencies and generative culture mindset required by the industry. The experiential learning at INSTEP’s live training plant, Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) allows our learners to perform real activities with various real-plant scenarios under non-hazardous environment in order to further enhance their competencies.

Being the key partner in PETRONAS’ growth, INSTEP is passionate in pushing boundaries in accelerating competency development in the energy industry and beyond. To date, INSTEP boasts an extensive track record of having produced more than 130,000 technical graduates in various fields for the global energy sector over a period of four decades.

INSTEP On-the-Job Learning (OJL) for Plant Turnaround Management and Execution

Plant turnaround is vital in process industry – to maintain consistent productive capacity, prevent accidents and improve safety at the plants. It is a scheduled stoppage of part or all of a plant’s operations for maintenance, to replace equipment, upgrade energy resources or maintain regulatory compliance.

Planning and managing turnarounds in plant environment can be complex and demanding; if turnarounds are not carefully planned and controlled, there might be issues and risks of serious budget overruns, schedule delays and negative impacts. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure the technical personnel are readily available and reliable for effective and coordinated turnaround activities.

INSTEP On-the-Job Learning (OJL) on Turnaround Management and Execution training is designed to provide structured training and guidelines for planning, managing, and executing process tasks related to Turnaround activities. The training was conducted using blended learning approach, with a combination of classroom and practical workshop modes, group discussions, and execution of Turnaround work at INSTEP live training plant: Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP).

The OJL took learners on a 10-day journey that began with setting strategic objectives during which they carried out planning & preparations of plant turnaround, pre-shutdown, and shutdown. The learners also conducted extensive and guided hands-on practices, monitoring activities and audits during the learning journey.

The learners involved are INSTEP Technician Training Programme (TTP) learners, engineers, and technicians from INSTEP Operation & Maintenance teams as well as other selected technical executives from Operation Management backgrounds.

Throughout the training led by experienced facilitators and trainers, learners are able to hone leadership skills and teamwork spirits, as well as enhance their profound knowledge and skills in maintenance and safe shutdown practices.

En. Kamarozaman Husin, Head of INSTEP Technical Learning Excellence Division said in his closing remarks, “The OJL training encompasses a holistic package of the best practices in any turnaround project, which are fundamentals for technical personnel to discharge their obligations in operation and maintenance work. Our live training plant, UDTP, is a functional and operative platform which allows our staff and learners to strengthen their basics and enhance their capability to address strenuous circumstances in real plant environment safely and efficiently.”

“One thing to remember is that although turnaround process can be challenging to manage and cope with, there is no work so urgent – that you cannot take time to perform it safely.”

Daily Toolbox briefing and meeting held every morning during the 10-day On-the-Job Learning journey.

INSTEP develops young engineers & technicians for Sarawak’s first mega methanol plant

Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd, established in 2017 by the state government of Sarawak, will be the first company in the state that produces methanol. The state’s first mega methanol plant with an annual capacity of 1.7 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) is currently under construction in Bintulu and is planned to begin operations by the end of 2023.

In meeting Sarawak Petchem’s high demand in training requirements, INSTEP is honoured to be the preferred technical learning solutions partner, which provided curated technical trainings for new engineers and technicians in Sarawak Petchem to support the operation and maintenance of the facility.

A total of 116 young Sarawak talents have started the Bridging Programme customised by INSTEP and Sarawak Petchem, called Technician Training Programme (TTP), starting August 2021. The training programme is customised in the areas of operations, maintenance, and health, safety and environment.

Mohd Hanafiah Hatta, one of the first batch of engineers sent to INSTEP for TTP, said, “I am really proud to be able to step foot on this training centre. INSTEP is no doubt the best place for oil & gas trainings, as it provides us (the learners) the best environment to learn and experience real life modern technology in petrochemical and oil & gas industry.”

“Being the first batch of technical talents in Sarawak Petchem, we are the pioneer and benchmark for the historic project in Sarawak’s petrochemical sector. It is my obligation to lead my fellow colleagues to thrive together, and to apply the knowledge and skills learnt at INSTEP in support of Sarawak’s oil & gas ventures and growth.”

INSTEP delivers industry & technology driven technical learning solutions through blended learning approach. Encompassing interactive classroom learning, hands-on training at practical workshops, INSTEP provides experiential learning at its own live training plant, namely Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) and exposure to commercial plant through plant attachment. The instructor to learner ratio is capped at 1:15 following international quality standards, to ensure effective learning environment for exchanging tacit knowledge, technology transfer and experiences.

The Technician Training Programme (TTP) is divided into 2 semesters and the learners are split into 4 trades, namely Operation, Mechanical, Electrical and Instrumentation. The 1st semester is when the learners undergo theoretical learning via hybrid mode (face-to-face + VILT) covering a wide range of modules such as Exploration & Production, Electrical, Instrumentation, HSE, and others. During the 2nd semester, the learners undergo 6 months of blended training which include theoretical learning, hands-on learning at practical workshops, experiential learning at UDTP. Following that, they undergo 3 months of On Job Training (OJT) at PETRONAS plants.

Hanafiah said, “Although the 1-year training programme was a challenging learning journey, we have made ourselves active in sports and recreational activities to inculcate the work-life balance. We play football, futsal, beach volleyballs, and have gym sessions after classes and it was during these hours that we get to know other learners on campus like the engineers from ExxonMobil, INPG (Senegal) as well as other PETRONAS engineers & technicians who participate in short-term training programmes here.”

The strategic partnership between INSTEP and Sarawak Petchem is a strong illustration of INSTEP as a crucial partner that meticulously packs every young talent with the essential skills and capability to be fit as a competent workforce in delivering the landmark Sarawak Methanol Project by 2024.

Being the key partner in PETRONAS’ growth, INSTEP is passionate in pushing boundaries in accelerating competency development in the energy industry and beyond.
