INSTEP Promotes Sustainability Agenda among Primary School Students

Nearing the year end does not deter INSTEP’s spirit to promote sustainability agenda, by conducting the second part of the signature CSR programme Sentuhan Edu-Lestari. The half-day programme is the continuation of the first session where 160 students participated in planting 80 mango trees (Harumanis) at INSTEP compound.

The Sentuhan Edu-Lestari Programme is conducted as a part of fulfilling the PETRONAS sustainability aspiration through the key areas of high-impact Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programmes. The programme took up two days from 23-24 November 2022, involving 160 participants from eight schools from the districts of Kuala Nerus and Setiu, Terengganu.

The programme included a session of interactive engagement with the students. A sharing on “Waste Classification” with fun games and activities throughout the session were prepared for the students. Enthusiastic and high-spirited cheers filled up the room during the session, with the students’ eagerness to answer questions and share their thoughts on the sustainability concepts.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, En. Idris bin Ibrahim enthusiastically delivered his welcoming remarks during the event.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, En. Idris bin Ibrahim in his speech during the event highlighted the importance of instilling the interest of being an active player in taking care of the nature from the young age. “I am very optimistic that this programme will spark your interest in giving a hand for nurturing the nature, and I hope you will continue to play your part in carrying out the sustainable practices in our daily lives”.

Taking it down a notch from the outdoor mango tree planting, in this session, the students were given chance to grow green beans in a used container, which aligned with the topic of “Waste Classification and Sustainability”. The students were asked to bring their own container from home, which called for their awareness on the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) concept.

The students actively participated in various activities during the session.

En. Idris bin Ibrahim also emphasised on the sustainability concept in his speech. “Sustainability is a continuous thing. Though we are doing it now, but the result is yet to come, the benefits will come into the picture later”.

The students came forward to share their thoughts on the activities and new knowledge gained from the session.

During the students’ sharing session, Husain Hilmi bin Mat Atar, a student from SK Bukit Wan mentioned about the essence of 3R. “If I were given a chance to make a change, I would like to add more bins according to the waste classifications, in order to have a cleaner school area.”

In addition, Nurul Hajar Nadiah binti Ramzi from SK Maras shared about the new knowledge she gained by participating in this event. “By coming to today’s session, I learnt a lot of new things, such as e-wastes, organic waste and sanitary waste”.

The students expressed their creativities through their artworks during the sharing session.

A teacher representative from SK Batu Rakit conveyed her gratitude to INSTEP for inviting her school to participate in the programme. “I am very thankful to INSTEP for inviting our school for today’s session. The students were really enjoying the activities and I hope the knowledge they gained here today will continuously benefit them”.

INSTEP Celebrates Second Batch of Job Ready Technicians for Sarawak’s First Methanol Project

3 November 2022 marked another INSTEP’s success story when 43 learners from Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd have successfully completed the Technician Training Programme (TTP). They are the second batch of TTP, tailored by INSTEP to train the young technical talents in areas of Operations, Maintenance, and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) to be a qualified technician in delivering the state’s first mega methanol aspiration.

The closing ceremony was honored by the presence of Chairman of Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd., YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Hj Abdul Aziz Dato Haji Husain, Director-in-charge of Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd., YBhg. Datu Dr Hj Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel and YBhg. Datu Hj Abdul Hadi Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir and Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, En. Idris Ibrahim.

YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Hj Abdul Aziz Dato Haji Husain in his speech regarded his acknowledgment to the enormous dedication from INSTEP as the key player in supporting the Sarawak’s first mega-methanol project.

“INSTEP and PETRONAS are continuously exhibiting an unwavering endeavor on accelerating the human capital to reinforce the advancement of local workforce and technical talents, and concurrently lessening the dependency on external workforce, in an effort to establish Bintulu as a petrochemical hub,” he added.

The job-ready technicians will be stationed to multiple PETRONAS plants in Bintulu and Labuan to undergo On Job Training (OJT) as a part of the training development programme. This is crucial for the learners to get the exposure of the real-life working experience and to exercise safe working practices in the real plants.

Quoting Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, En. Idris Ibrahim’s words,” In a world that is increasingly volatile and uncertain, competency is currency. Equipping yourself with technical skills and knowledge can increase the employability and selling factor of oneself.”

He also touched upon the importance of setting the tone of professionalism to the learners. “The most important reminder to our learners before entering the professional field, is to stand firm and steadfast on your integrity belief. Knowledge and skills without discipline and self-integrity are insubstantial.”

Azri Ibrahim delivered his appreciation speech on behalf of his fellow colleagues.

Azri Ibrahim, the leader of Batch 2 Learners, conveyed his profound gratitude to be able to be a part of Sarawak Petchem legacy and joining the 1-year training programme at INSTEP.

“Despite coming from different family and educational background in Sarawak, we are able to adapt and study together here in INSTEP. We gained extensive new knowledge and skills including critical thinking and problem solving from our experienced instructors. This will be a momentous mark in our lives, personally and professionally,” he said.

The dignitaries were also entertained with a stage performance from the learners.

This joyous ceremony is not the end for the learners, it only signifies the beginning of a new journey to them. With all the knowledge gained from INSTEP, this will be a kickstart to carve a new career pathway for the learners, endorsing INSTEP’s fruitful education system.


INSTEP has so far produced more than 130,000 technical graduates in various fields for the global energy sector over a period of four decades, an illustration of the passion in being the key player for PETRONAS human capital growth.

KTC Produces Graduates with High Employability Rates

A convocation ceremony for Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC) is hosted on 29 September 2022 at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) to commemorate the completion of Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (Instrumentasi & Kawalan) which involves 42 trainees of 2017 and 2018 intakes.

The graduation scrolls were handed to the graduates by Director General of Sabah State Public Service Datuk (Datu) Rosmadi Datu Sulai.

In his speech at the ceremony, Datu Rosmadi said: “We are indeed thankful that despite the numerous challenges faced by the industry globally, PETRONAS remains unwavering in its commitment towards investing in education and human capital development particularly in the Sabah state.”

This includes the setting up of KTC, construction of MRSM Ranau, annual award of the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme for students to pursue tertiary education, Vocational Institutions Sponsorship and Training Assistance (VISTA) programme with five identified institutions in the state which aims to develop the technical and vocational capabilities of Sabahan youths, as well as other numerous programmes that serve the major aim to nurture talents for the state and the nation, he said.

Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd, En. Idris Ibrahim, said KTC was set up in 2011 as part of PETRONAS corporate social responsibility programme in Sabah to support the state’s human capital development, particularly in the oil and gas industry.

“KTC is committed to developing and equipping the youths of Sabah with the necessary qualifications and skills required to enroll in the oil and gas industry,” he said at the KTC convocation ceremony.

Also present were Secretary of Home Affairs and Research, Datuk Awang Shaminan Awang Sahari; Head of Human Capital Investment, PETRONAS Group Human Resource Management, Syed Mohamad Muhafiz Syed Bakar; and Head of PETRONAS Sabah and Labuan, Siti Ayu Abdul Wahab.

KTC is the first institution in Sabah to be recognised as an Accredited Centre by the Department of Skills Development under the Ministry of Human Resources. It offers a three-year full-time diploma-level training in Industrial Instrumentation & Control System – Monitoring & Control (Level 4), Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM).

Quoting one of the few female graduates, Syra Olivia Rayner, she mentioned about the importance of the vital processes learnt in KTC in performing her tasks in the oil & gas industry. Syra secured a job as an instrumentation technician for a local company in offshore projects quickly after her completion of the training programme, which proves the credibility of a KTC graduate in the Oil & Gas industry.

“Being the only female at my workplace, it is not difficult for me to adjust to my new working environment including working on platforms, because I love working outdoors. Working in oil and gas industry demands teamwork spirit since our skills improvement requires helps from others,” she explained.

KTC has so far produced 174 graduates with nearly 100% employment by the oil and gas as well as by other industries. Currently KTC is collaborating with Akademi Binaan Malaysia (ABM), to provide scaffolding training for Sabahan youths under the VISTA programme.

INSTEP Continues to Support Developing Countries through Knowledge Transfer

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) continues its commitment to support the growth of global talents of oil and gas industry through strategic collaboration with Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme since 2017. The supports are in the form of various expertise and knowledge sharing including championing oil and gas technical collaboration amongst developing countries.

 

The collaboration between MTCP and Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) continues this year as INSTEP recently hosted the 4th training session under MTCP, which this time around themed ‘Introduction to Petroleum Technology’.

 

The training sessions were carried out for 5 days via Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) which comprised virtual visit to INSTEP facilities, live demonstrations by our industry-experienced instructors, video offerings, professional coaching, and role-plays.

 

This session was attended by 20 participants from various countries, including Algeria (2), Cambodia (2), Jordan (2), Mexico (2), Morocco (1), Oman (2), Suriname (1), Thailand (1), and Uganda (4). Among these are Petroleum Engineer, Geologist, Environmental Affairs Specialist, HR office and so on.

 

The programmes offered the participants an overview of Oil & Gas Industry within Malaysia and enabled them to be familiarised with the industry operations & practices in Malaysia, which include the concepts of HSE elements, sustainability development, Upstream (geology, exploration, drilling, production, etc.), Downstream (refinery & petrochemical), as well as new energy initiatives in Malaysia. The highlight of the programme was the virtual visit to INSTEP Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP), which is a live training platform that re-creates the real-world plant scenarios and allow the learners to upskill their technical competency in day-to-day operation.

Mr. Abir B A Patah, the Plant Engineer at INSTEP took the participants a tour via live demo/telecast around the Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP).

One of the participants from Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), Lilian Nyakuni, said, “As a HR Professional in the Oil & Gas sector, the programme has given me a detailed insights of how and what our technical staff are going through in delivering their daily objectives and goals. After the programme, I know how to better support them and to create talent management strategies that are fit for our technical workforces like how INSTEP does.”

The Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) was officially launched on 7 September 1980 at the Commonwealth Heads of State Meeting in New Delhi, India, to signify Malaysia’s commitment to the South-South Cooperation, particularly the Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC). The MTCP emphasises on the development of human resources through the provision of trainings in various areas which are essential for a country’s development such as the public administration, good governance, health, education, agriculture, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, economy and finance, ICT and environment. Annually, Malaysia offered more than 65 capacity-building and technical assistance programmes under the MTCP, which have benefited more than 34,000 participants from 144 countries.

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) continues its commitment to support the growth of global talents of oil and gas industry through strategic collaboration with Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme since 2017. The supports are in the form of various expertise and knowledge sharing including championing oil and gas technical collaboration amongst developing countries.
