INSTEP Supports Global Talent Growth in HSE and Maintenance Management

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) is stepping up its commitment to support the growth of global talents of oil and gas industry. The supports are in the form of various expertise and knowledge sharing including championing oil and gas technical collaboration amongst developing countries.

INSTEP recently conducted its fifth virtual training session for 2021 under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) with a theme of ‘Best Practices for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Maintenance Excellence in Oil & Gas Industry’, designed to extend technical knowledge and expertise to various international participants.

The five-day session was attended by 22 participants from Argentina, Bhutan, Ecuador, Ghana, Indonesia, Iraq, Mauritania, Namibia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim, said, “We are proud to be part of MTCP since 2004, in support of the Malaysian Government’s commitment to promote regional and technical cooperation as well as nurture collective self-reliance amongst the developing countries.”

Commenting on the programme, Indonesia delegate, Machnun Arif said that his participation in the MTCP session proved to be a worthwhile investment as he was able to benefit a lot from the effective course content and experienced instructors.

“After this training, I have gained valuable knowledge not only in HSE and Maintenance Management System but also the overview of Oil & Gas processing that I have never learnt before,” said Machnun.

Meanwhile, Aloise Ngor Mak Diagne from Senegal said, “I will implement the knowledge and practices shared in the programme at my workplace. As our local facility is still new and requires many improvements, these best practices in maintenance and HSE can be embedded into our daily operations.”

INSTEP has recorded excellent health and safety performance with notable international accolade such as The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Gold Awards for 2020 and 2021. Besides these, INSTEP also received the Gold Class 1 Award by the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) for three consecutive years in 2019.

Commenting on the programme, Indonesia delegate, Machnun Arif said that his participation in the MTCP session proved to be a worthwhile investment as he was able to benefit a lot from the effective course content and experienced instructors.

40 tonnes of unused textiles collected under 3R campaign

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has successfully collected 40 tonnes of unused textiles from public under “Recycle Your Clothes” programme. The initiative is part of INSTEP effort in responding to the pledge towards a sustainable future.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim says, “INSTEP is committed towards combatting global warming issues and landfills overflow. It is also resonating PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda, particularly the Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) aspiration by 2050.”

The “Recycle Your Clothes’ programme is a collaborative effort with Life Line Clothing Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a textile recycling company that aims to reduce fabric landfill waste. The target weight collection was 8 tonnes for a duration of 1 month.

With full support from Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT), Kuala Terengganu District and Land Office, Kuala Nerus District and Land Office and People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), few public areas such as supermarket and night market site in Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu were selected as collection points.

Programme Committee Member from INSTEP, Mohd Muaz Abdul Rasid expressed his proud to be part of the committee as the initiative promotes awareness among the local community on the importance sustainable environment. To reduce the risk of COVID-19 pandemic, the collection activities were carried out strictly in compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) such as drive through concept with minimal physical contact.

Cars can be seen queueing up outside the parking space of GIANT Kuala Terengganu for the volunteers to collect their donation.
Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Besut has also demonstrated the spirit of sustainability towards safeguarding the environment, by contributing a sizable amount of donation to the initiative.

According to the Project Chief, Roshaslinie Amdam-Ramli, the project received overwhelming response from the community with a collection of 40 tonnes, which has exceeded 5-time target in one week. The collection was managed under 3R waste hierarchy principle which is ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ Waste Hierarchy.

The unwanted or unused textiles including clothes, bags, belts, curtains, and blankets collected from the public sent to Life Line Clothing for sorting and reproduction. The wearable garments, bags, and linen are either sold at second-hand clothing retails or exported to the developing countries in Africa and Pacific nations, countries where there is incessant demand for inexpensive clothing.

On the other hand, the unwearable items are reproduced into rags as industrial wiping cloths, and the highly damaged textiles are to be reused for other purposes such as blankets or be processed into refused-derived fuel (RDF) for industries kilns.

The eventual profit made from the selling and exportation of the reproduced products will be donated to National Cancer Council Malaysia (MAKNA).

The clothes recycling program is part of INSTEP collective efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Besides in-campus food composter house and the installation of solar rooftop across the campus, INSTEP is aspired to prepare highly skilled future sustainable global workforce from its new offerings in renewable energy modules and solar training system.

All unused clothes were packed into jumbo bags before being sent to Life Line Clothing using 5 trips of heavy trucks.

INSTEP welcomes second batch of Senegalese Young Talents

Wide smiles can be seen across the screen as the virtual opening ceremony kickstarted the INPG learners' journey at INSTEP.

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) hosted an opening ceremony on Monday September 6, 2021 to welcome the second cohort of learners from Institut National du Pétrole et du Gaz (INPG), Senegal who will undergo a 6-month customised On Job Training (OJT) programme.

Due to COVID-19, the opening ceremony is hosted virtually. Key attendees at the ceremony include Mr. Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, Mr. Aguibou Ba, General Director of INPG, Mr. Abdoulaye Barro, the Ambassador of Senegal to Malaysia, Mrs. Khady Ndiaye, Country Director of KOSMOS Energy and Mrs. Fatimata Sow, External Affairs Manager of British Petroleum (BP), Senegal.

The eight young talents from Senegal had undergone 14 days of quarantine at Dorsett Grand Subang, Malaysia before arriving at INSTEP on 3 September 2021.

The 2021 learners come from different backgrounds, including Geoscience, Process Engineering and Electromechanical Engineering, and they are specialised in Petroleum Engineering.

The training programme is part of the INPG Petroleum Engineering Master Programme’s 22-week internship. INSTEP has customised the OJT programme to suit the specific requirements of INPG Master Programme, which aims to provide learning opportunity in exploration and plant operation activities through OTJ training scheme in both upstream and downstream platforms environment.

This training programme is designed to be conducted at INSTEP Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) and live PETRONAS plants. All learners are required to complete their master thesis based on the case study given during their attachment at the plants.

“I cannot thank INSTEP enough for this successful collaboration since 2019. The first cohort has been a huge success. They are equipped with the right skills and knowledge in oil & gas industry, by applying what they have learnt at INSTEP when they came back to Senegal. INSTEP has the capability to shape our learners into an industry-ready, empowered and enabled workforce. We see the difference, and this is why we want to renew the experience and have more students coming to INSTEP this year,” said Mr. Aguibou.

Mr. Momath Kéba Diop, representing the fellow learners from INPG, expressed his gratitude towards INSTEP management team for the warm hospitality since their arrival at Malaysia.

Over the past number of years, we have been dedicated to adopting and implementing the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy within the organisation and its employees. By setting clear goals for HSE Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and organising quarterly Generative HSSE Culture, the right safety behaviour and culture can be developed among workforce.

In the recent quarter of the year, we have particularly focused on the physical and mental health of our employees, as the new norm of working environment has caused considerable impacts in our lives. For example, we’ve held a few unplugging sessions, virtual Zumba session, awareness talks and so on. Master of Science in Process Plant Operations for September Intake ​
