Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) opened its virtual door to welcome guests from The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia on 12 October 2021.

Leveraging on the digital platform via Microsoft Teams, INSTEP, together with Project Management Technical Division, IEM and Oil, Gas & Mining Engineering Technical Division, IEM has conducted the virtual visit and it was attended by more than 120 participants. The visit was graced by the presence of Ir. Ong Chin Loong, the President of IEM, and Ir. Prof. Dr. Norlida Buniyamin, the Deputy President of IEM as well as Mr. Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP.

The visit aims to provide insights and awareness among the participants on INSTEP’s role as the custodian of technical trainings for PETRONAS and non-PETRONAS organisations. Besides, the participants can witness INSTEP campus facilities and its capacity in charting the training pathway of technical workforce virtually.

During the opening speech, Ir. Ong Chin Loong said, “Resonating PETRONAS’ aspiration of Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) by 2050, I believe the comprehensive educational system and facilities in INSTEP ensure our future batch of petroleum, chemical and energy engineers to be empowered and upskilled to overcome the hurdles and lead us in this endeavor of Green Recovery in the country.

Re-tool your career with Professional Drone Operator Training at INSTEP

PETRONAS Refinery & Petrochemicals Corporation (PRPC) Sdn Bhd, Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) has opened the door to Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) to conduct its first ever drone operation training & certification programme.

The training has attracted 18 learners, comprising of mainly PETRONAS technicians and executives on offsite facilities and environment at PRPC.

Supporting PETRONAS’ growth strategy into innovative solutions and digital transformation, INSTEP is continuously stepping up to play its role as the premier learning arm of PETRONAS as a Technology Acceleration Enabler.

Drones, or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), have been breaking barriers in the way industries and organisations do business. They bring a host of benefits as they are cost-effective, time-saving, and life-changing. Most importantly, they reduce the manpower required to perform work in dangerous situation, such as working at height and other extreme environments, thus lowering the risks of incidents and hazards compared to the conventional method.

Drone technology is constantly evolving, and it has been adopted and integrated into businesses in many PETRONAS and non-PETRONAS facilities across the globe. To keep up with the growing demand for drone operating skills, INSTEP has rolled out the Professional Drone Operator Training which is a fit-for-purpose training programme that fully comprehends the technicality of drone operation.

Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, Mr Idris Ibrahim commented, “As we place the tagline ‘Experiencing is Enriching’ at the heart of our business, we are passionate about the progress in transforming our learners’ experience and helping them realise ‘what could be’ to ‘what is’.”

The programme incorporates comprehensive curriculum, flight simulation, and practical outdoor operation guided by industry experts and professional drone operators with vast real-world experience.

Being the first batch of learners in the training programme, Mr. Nor Azman Zakaria, Manager of Area Maintenance Offsite Facilities at PRPC, said, “The learning materials in the training are highly relevant to my role as the Drone Programmme Leader for PRPC UF. The hands-on session allows us to fly the drone manually and set up autonomous flight mission for industrial application.”

“This training is highly recommended to anyone who will operate a drone as part of their technical roles regardless of which industries they are in.” he added.

The Professional Drone Operator Training Programme aims to produce certified and competent drone pilot who can operate drone in a safe, structured, and efficient manner. In addition to that, INSTEP is capable to customise, tailor, and develop the drone operation training programmme to suit various organisations’ need.

INSTEP is established 40 years ago and since then, our purpose has remained the same, which is to continuously accelerate competency development through experiential learning and provide innovative solutions to upskill our technical talents. Additionally, INSTEP is committed to support the Facilities of Future (FoF) Programme in PETRONAS, by providing testbed, training programmes and facilities for the innovation and technologies in robots.

A participant was undertaking a practical flight simulation under the guidance of professional drone operators.

Disclaimer: The face-to-face training programme was carried out strictly in compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) set by the National Security Council (NSC) and PETRONAS Pandemic Response Team (PPRT) Directives.

INSTEP Supports Global Talent Growth in HSE and Maintenance Management

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) is stepping up its commitment to support the growth of global talents of oil and gas industry. The supports are in the form of various expertise and knowledge sharing including championing oil and gas technical collaboration amongst developing countries.

INSTEP recently conducted its fifth virtual training session for 2021 under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) with a theme of ‘Best Practices for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Maintenance Excellence in Oil & Gas Industry’, designed to extend technical knowledge and expertise to various international participants.

The five-day session was attended by 22 participants from Argentina, Bhutan, Ecuador, Ghana, Indonesia, Iraq, Mauritania, Namibia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim, said, “We are proud to be part of MTCP since 2004, in support of the Malaysian Government’s commitment to promote regional and technical cooperation as well as nurture collective self-reliance amongst the developing countries.”

Commenting on the programme, Indonesia delegate, Machnun Arif said that his participation in the MTCP session proved to be a worthwhile investment as he was able to benefit a lot from the effective course content and experienced instructors.

“After this training, I have gained valuable knowledge not only in HSE and Maintenance Management System but also the overview of Oil & Gas processing that I have never learnt before,” said Machnun.

Meanwhile, Aloise Ngor Mak Diagne from Senegal said, “I will implement the knowledge and practices shared in the programme at my workplace. As our local facility is still new and requires many improvements, these best practices in maintenance and HSE can be embedded into our daily operations.”

INSTEP has recorded excellent health and safety performance with notable international accolade such as The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Gold Awards for 2020 and 2021. Besides these, INSTEP also received the Gold Class 1 Award by the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) for three consecutive years in 2019.
