INSTEP 40th Anniversary Virtual Celebration

In celebrating over four decades of educational excellence since 1981, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has launched a 40th Anniversary commemorative coffee table book to mark the institution’s journey towards educational excellence.

Entitled “The Inspiring 40 Years and Beyond”, the book showcases INSTEP’s growth from a temporary training school in 1981 to an internationally-recognised technical learning centre, covering its purpose, people, experience and aspirations in support of PETRONAS’ sustainable development agenda.

Key attendees at the virtual launch include PETRONAS’s Vice President of Group Human Resource Management, Puan Farehana Hanapiah, who is also the Board Chairperson of PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd (PTTSB), and INSTEP’s Chief Executive Officer, En. Idris Ibrahim.

Commenting on INSTEP’s 40th anniversary achievement, Pn Farehana said, “For the past four decades, INSTEP has been a key partner in PETRONAS’ growth as a leading energy player through the high-quality graduates it produced, in support of PETRONAS’ sustainability ambitions. INSTEP now plays a vital role in building the workforce of the future who are equipped with the right expertise in low-carbon and clean energy solutions.”

Over the years, INSTEP has continuously evolved in its experiential learning to generate job-ready engineers and technicians. The Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP), which simulates actual upstream and downstream plant scenarios in safe operating conditions, has become an industry game changer that draws interest among leading industry players in the global arena.

“We have grown from strength-to-strength and are proud to have produced over 130,000 highly-skilled oil and gas professionals with customers and learners from over 35 countries. Today, our graduates are contributing to over 30 refinery and petrochemical plants at more than 100 platforms around the world”, said En. Idris.

Big thumbs up from En. Idris Ibrahim (left) and Pn. Farehana Hanapiah (right) with the newly launched Coffee Table Book in their hands!

INSTEP had also taken a step forward as a sustainability corroborator to PETRONAS sustainability agenda by transforming itself into a greener and more energy-efficient campus with the installation of solar rooftop solutions up to 1.4MWp in solar capacity. This milestone is commemorated in the same ceremony through a signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by En. Idris and Head of PETRONAS New Energy and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Power Sdn Bhd, Dr. Jason Mariyappan.

“The solar installation at INSTEP forms part of the overall effort to reduce carbon emissions from PETRONAS’ internal assets across the world, in line with PETRONAS’ commitment towards net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Moving forward, we are exploring further opportunities and will introduce more internal low carbon solutions across our operations,” said Dr. Jay.

Under the MoU, the solar rooftops will be installed across INSTEP’s buildings and rooftops at its Terengganu campus. This effort will see INSTEP achieve potential cost reductions in energy consumption of up to RM4 million in the span of two decades. Additionally, a 5kWP solar training system will be installed on campus, enabling hands-on training for students with renewable energy modules and products. This supports INSTEP’s aspiration to produce highly skilled graduates for the renewable energy industry.

INSTEP helps 2668 primary students with Back-to-School Programme

In the spirit of reaching out, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has launched the Back-to-School (BTS) Programme as an annual effort to fund necessities to eight (8) schools as preparation for 2021 schooling term to motivate and encourage the students to continually study hard in the education process.

This community outreach initiative is a collaboration between INSTEP and Association of Wives and Women Staff of PETRONAS (PETRONITA), Jawatankuasa Masjid Al-Ehsan, and Badan Kebajikan Islam PETRONAS (BAKIP), which benefited a total of 2,668 students by providing school necessities, such as stationeries, face masks, temperature scanner, hand sanitisers as well as STEM related reading materials.

The Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, Idris Ibrahim said that learning is a give-and-take process, whereby education requires a collective effort: the teacher, the student, the parents, and the community.

‘Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something. We believe that the children are our future assets, and they should be given a chance to pursue quality education for a better future. INSTEP is always guided by its aspiration to be a progressive and innovative technical solutions partner, and we will continue to further increase our CSR initiatives to the communities to contribute towards a sustainable future.’

The CEO of INSTEP, Idris Ibrahim handed the school necessities to the representatives of the selected schools, (Top) SK Batu Raki, Kuala Terengganu; (Middle) SK Pechah Rotan, Kuala Terengganu; (Bottom) SK Pagar Besi, Kuala Terengganu.

INSTEP Continues Empowering Japanese Engineers from INPEX

Representatives from INSTEP happily welcomed the learners from INPEX Corporation.

On 22 Feb 2021, INSTEP welcomed engineers from INPEX Corporation, a Japanese E&P company, for an advanced HSE training programme. This batch is the fifth batch that INSTEP received from INPEX, and the training programme will take place from 22 February to 5 March 2021.

This year, with international travel restriction imposed due to the pandemic, INSTEP has customised a 10-day On-the-Job Training (OJT) programme which will be delivered via Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) instead of face-to-face delivery. The training programme focuses on occupational and environmental safety aspects and practices in the oil & gas industry.

The first VILT to INPEX learners was successfully delivered in 18 January 2021 recently. This approach signified INSTEP’s customer-focused mindset and courage to act in overcoming border restriction by bringing experiential learning to their customers and learners, helping them to grow and reach their full potential amidst this unprecedented time.

Live demonstration of hands-on training complements the theoretical knowledge and skills that INPEX learners gained from VILT.

“Learning is about giving and taking. The learners from the previous batches have benefitted from this training programme, so the learners in this batch will get to learn from their seniors upon completion of the training programme,” said Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, emphasising on the role of INSTEP as a progressive solutions partner wherein they are passionate in continuously enriching the technical workforce for a sustainable future.

The strong “omotenashi” (customer centricity) spirit and commitment culminated in the strong partnership between INSTEP and INPEX in accelerating the human capital development of the energy industry. Since 2017, INPEX has been sending their engineers to INSTEP for training, and even recommended Mitsubishi and Mitsui to INSTEP, thus flourishing sustainable value for Japanese engineers.
