Being conferred as the Gold Award winner signifies INSTEP clear demonstration of well-developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture, plus outstanding control of risk with very low level of error, harm and loss.

This international award has added on to list of excellent occupational safety & health performance accolades such as Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) 2017 and 2018. INSTEP’s concerted effort and commitment in embracing the value of “Good HSSE is Good Business” and “Together we progress towards Generative HSSE Culture” are examples of Focused Execution and Shared Success among the teams.

INSTEP As Technology Acceleration Enabler in PETRONAS 5G Project

Supporting PETRONAS growth strategy into digitalisation space, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has always supported the research & development of latest industry & technology solutions in the energy industry by capitalising on our world-class facilities and experienced industry experts. 

Working hand-in-hand with Project Delivery & Technology (PD&T) team and PETRONAS Research Sdn. Bhd. (PRSB), INSTEP is honoured to be the first testing facility for 5G deployment in oil & gas industry through the 3-month feasibility study on remote controlling and monitoring of INSTEP’s Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) Water System from PRSB via fibre optic, coupled with CCTVs, drones, head mounted, and AnyMal (platform robot). 5G project is one of PETRONAS oil & gas transformation and digitalisation initiative aiming to improve operation & production, implement remote monitoring and diagnostic, and improve workers’ safety and security.

INSTEP’s world-class facilities, in particular, UDTP, being the first-of-its-kind in the world, simulates real plant experiential learning to generate job-ready engineers & technicians. The real-world simulation of Upstream and Downstream plant scenarios in a safe environment has made UDTP a suitable testbed to test and pilot new & innovative technology deployment in safe operating conditions before the full commercial application. INSTEP is forever ready to support and accelerate PETRONAS Technology Readiness assessment by actively stepping up to play our role as the Technology Acceleration Enabler.

Since 5G network is a key national infrastructure play for Malaysia in driving its economic growth to digital economy, PETRONAS’ 5G project has attracted the attention of Yang Berhormat Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia, and Dr. Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek, Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Their visit to INSTEP for live demonstration of 5G deployment has demonstrated their utmost concern and support for the 5G technology to be an enabler in propelling the nation’s digital transformation agenda moving forward.

INSTEP Carved Another Milestone in West Africa!

All smiles for the successful milestone carved between INSTEP and GNPC!

 

Kicking start the new decade of 2020s strongly, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has added The Gambia to our belt of international clients, which makes The Gambia our second West African country following our strategic partnership with Senegal in July 2019.

 

This significant milestone of INSTEP’s involvement in West Africa was carved when both parties signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the provision of technical training programme in accelerating the human capital development of The Gambia.

The signatories for the agreement were INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Idris Ibrahim and Deputy Managing Director of Gambia National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Mrs. Isatou Auber-Faal. GNPC is the business arm of The Gambia government within the downstream petroleum sector, which operates through distributing petroleum products such as petrol, gasoil, car oil and related products.

“This agreement signifies PETRONAS’ continuous involvement in West Africa and INSTEP is committed to being the solutions partner in empowering the local people’s capability,” said Mr. Idris Ibrahim, INSTEP CEO. This cooperation between both parties covers the entire value chain of the oil & gas industry through delivering customised niche programmes that will build the local people’s technical competencies. This is in support of PETRONAS’ upstream ventures and potential growth in the region.

Stepping into a new year, this first agreement demonstrates INSTEP’s undivided commitment in “enriching lives for a sustainable future,” through accelerating learners’ competency development to prepare fit for future workforce in this VUCA world.

Seven Countries United Under One Roof In INSTEP Cultural Night

With the theme of “Embracing Diversity and Enriching Lives in Unity,” Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) celebrated cultural diversity by organising a memorable event – ‘Cultural Night’. The event was truly a night to remember by many as the Sri Gelam Hall was flooded with colours of over 350 guests from different nationalities all around the world: Papua New Guinea, Senegal, Japan, Oman, Iraq, Brunei, and last but not least, Malaysia.

Cultural Night was indeed a platform where the learners could unleash their creativity and talents as well as to serve the guests with extra knowledge and experience from different cultures. The night has brought many unforgettable experiences and wonderful memories as the audience was fed with not just delicious delicacies but with spectacular performances from Papuan New Guinea, Iraqi, Bruneian, and Senegalese learners who are currently pursuing their technical training at INSTEP.

Papuan New Guinea learners kick-started the night with a very energetic dance performance followed by a group of Iraqi learners enthusiastically performing the jubilant Chobi dance.

The event drew many attention when the Senegalese learners demonstrated a live wrestling match, which is an all-time-favourite sports back in their homeland. This was followed by an amazing ‘Jong Sarat’ dance performed by the Bruneian learners while another group of Iraqi learners sang a sentimental ‘Mawal’ song. The final performance of ‘Joget Pahang’ by a mixture of local and international learners even received a standing ovation as many learners danced along on the floor.

Adding more colours to the Cultural Night was the feast of many delicious delicacies ranging from an assortments of desserts, appetisers, and world cuisine recipes. Guests had the chance to experience different cuisines from different countries.

INSTEP Won Localisation Award In Getenergy Global 2019

Embracing our Winning Aspiration – “A progressive solutions partner enriching energy workforce for a sustainable future”, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has once again added one more success story to our belt through winning the Localisation Award in the recent Getenergy Global 2019 for our relentless effort and contribution in supporting the local education and technical competency building.

The Getenergy Global 2019 is a major networking and business forum in which invited delegates discuss some of the major education, training and localisation issues facing the world’s energy industry. This event marks a major milestone, not only for the future of the training and education for the global oil, gas and energy workforce, but also how that workforce will shape the fast-changing energy business.

INSTEP CEO, Idris Ibrahim was one of the invited speakers to deliver his expertise and insights in the “Opening Summit: Understanding the Changing Role of National VS International Training in Meeting the Requirements of the Oil & Gas Industry” and “Workshop 7: Innovation in Skills Development”. Joining him were oil & gas industry experts from all around the world.

Winning the Localisation Award is a substantiation that INSTEP has been progressively contributing towards the human capital development and nationalisation of local talents. Commemorative moment signified the start of cooperation between INSTEP and BFI.

14 September 2019 marks a major milestone achieved for both Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and Brunei Fertiliser Industries (BFI) at Empire Hotel and Country Club in Jerudong, Brunei. The state-owned BFI inked an agreement with INSTEP for the latter to accelerate Bruneians’ human capital development in supporting the operations and maintenance of Brunei’s new ammonia & urea plant.

Present was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Brunei’s Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy. The agreement was signed by INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim, and BFI Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed S Baderkhan. This signing ceremony signifies the start of cooperation in the area of technical training and capability building for operations & maintenance of Brunei’s urea & ammonia plant.

Prior to this project coming onstream in 2021, 149 learners will undergo 6-month customised training programme in five trades, namely Operations, Laboratory, Mechanical (Static & Rotating), Electrical, and Instrumentation. Upon successful completion of the training programme, the learners will be awarded full-time employment with BFI before the company commences its operations.

BFI learners were excitedly anticipating to embark on their transformational learning experience at INSTEP starting from Oct 2019 onwards!

As part of Brunei’s effort to diversify economy through expanding value creation of the oil & gas industry, this project is one of the two largest downstream oil & gas projects in Brunei. Once operational, the plant will produce 2,200 tonnes of ammonia and 3,900 tonnes of urea every day using the large natural gas reserves to help create high-quality nitrogen fertiliser for export.

INSTEP Iraqi Learners Won Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards

Bright smiles beaming off everyone’s face upon receiving this honour on stage!

Reigning for the fourth time in a row, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has once again won the Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards 2019! This year, our relentless effort and delivery of BTEC qualifications saw two of our international learners winning Pearson BTEC Outstanding Learner Awards for the first time ever.

These two Iraqi learners, namely Mustafa Dheyaa Abdulkareem and Imad Farhan Sahib, hail from Production Operation Training Batch 4 (POT-4), who successfully completed their 6-month training at INSTEP and were among the first batch of POT to be conferred BTEC Certification. Out of all 79 learners from POT-4, they were chosen to be INSTEP representatives because of their high achievements in grades, vocational excellence, and other co-curricular activities. All their hard work and grit paid off when they were among the 18 BTEC winners after contending with other learners throughout Malaysia!

Mustafa accomplished his Pearson BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Diploma (SRF) Oil and Gas Technology (Production) with a distinction. As the group leader of POT-4, he proved his strong leadership qualities of courageous and ownership through representing POT-4 learners to contribute significantly in any engagement with INSTEP management. He also earned his respect through supporting the team closely whilst still enabling them to work independently, cultivating a high morale learning environment.

Imad attained overall distinction in Pearson BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Diploma (SRF) Oil and Gas Technology (Instrumentation). Being the class leader of Instrumentation, he smartly expressed his leadership quality through actively involving in INSTEP Iraqi student committee and often volunteering himself in any events. “Stay positive and be optimistic in achieving target by putting in 200% of hard work” is the principle that he upholds and lives by, which is a perfect demonstration of PETRONAS Cultural Belief “Results Matter”.

Embracing our Statement of Purpose – “A progressive energy and solutions partner enriching lives for a sustainable future”, INSTEP is grateful of contributing towards the capability building of Iraqis and nationalisation of talents, enriching Iraqis’ lives for their sustainable future. As of to date, INSTEP has produced more than 300 competent Iraqis for plant Operations & Maintenance, and these two learners are among those currently working in PETRONAS Carigali Iraq Holding B.V. in Iraq.

Subsea Christmas Tree Donation

Themed “The Legacy Continues with INSTEP, Enriching Subsea Knowledge”, 9 July 2019 marked a major milestone for Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and PC Mauritania 1 Pty Ltd (PCMPL) as the former received the ‘Subsea Christmas Tree’ from the latter, witnessed by honourable guests En Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd; En Ahmad Lutpi Haron, International Production Expert from International Assets; En Wan M Marzuki Wan Ismail, Head of Infrastructure Engineering from Group Technical Solutions (GTS); and En Izrie Ghazali, Project Manager from Group Project Delivery (GPD).

For those of you wondering, the ‘Subsea Christmas Tree’ is a system of valves, piping, and connectors used to direct, control, and regulate the flow of oil, gas or water into or out of the well.

Deepwater capability development journey for PETRONAS begins with the acquisition of Chinguetti Field in Mauritania, West Africa, with PCMPL as the Field Operator. The interest of the field including three offshore exploration blocks, was acquired from Woodside Energy Limited (WEL) on 25 December 2007. Discovered in 2001, the Chinguetti field is located in Deep Water Block 4, about 80 km west of the coastline and about 90 km from the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott.

PETRONAS’ objective is to establish the foundation and eventually develop and enhance internal deepwater capability by operating the Chinguetti field. According to En Lutpi, “Operations in Chinguetti Field is a reflection of PETRONAS’ extensive journey in deepwater. Although the field has stopped producing, the experience continues through learning, producing talents through INSTEP for deepwater ventures in Mexico and Africa.”

The Chinguetti operations has served as the “breeding ground” for the young but enthusiastic engineers to acquire, develop and enhance their skills in deepwater environment. With experience in operating Chinguetti field, integrated capability is available across OPUs/HCUs, offering end to end solution in the five key focus areas i.e. Exploration, Development, Operation, Decommissioning and R&D. Deepwater best practices and lessons learnt implementation drives project value improvement derived from the experience operating Chinguetti field.

As part of normal field life cycle, it is concluded that the field’s journey has come to an end, ready to be abandoned and decommissioned. This has opened up an opportunity for International Asset (IA) to collaborate with Project Delivery & Technology (PD&T) Division , who has been entrusted to execute the Chinguetti Abandonment & Decommissioning (A&D), the first deepwater A&D project for PETRONAS.

The Chinguetti A&D execution is divided into two phases. Phase 1: Temporary Well Suspension and FPSO Decommissioning & Demobilisation, Phase 2: Wells Plug & Abandonment. Phase 1 commenced in 2017 and successfully completed in May 2018. Meanwhile, Phase 2 campaign will commence in Q4 this year, encompassing Wells Plug & Abandonment (P&A) of 15 temporary suspended wells.

In line with A&D programme, PD&T and IA have taken the effort to enhance value proposition of the ‘Subsea Christmas Tree’ by donating it to INSTEP. “INSTEP is honoured to receive such a meaningful contribution and we are geared towards sweating the asset to add value to subsea training, supporting PETRONAS’ agenda in international growth”, says En Idris.

As a recipient of this asset, INSTEP sees the ‘Subsea Christmas Tree’ as more than just an asset, but a perfect avenue to add value to their training programmes. En Wan M Marzuki says that it is undoubtedly PETRONAS’ focus to drive subsea solutions towards deepwater, shallow water, and marginal field. Through collaboration with INSTEP, we will be able to produce new portfolios for subsea training and development, and build up SKG training.

The ‘Subsea Christmas Tree’ will complement INSTEP’s experiential learning for 8 out of 17 existing SKG 12.5 programmes, for example, Introduction to Subsea Engineering Level 1, Intervention of Subsea Equipment Level 2 and Subsea Christmas Tree & Wellhead Level 2. Additional one new programme will be envisioned and readily made available by Q4 2019 with a widened target audience, not limited to only SKGs, but also to educate on the awareness of subsea operations, enhancing subsea capability.

“The Subsea Christmas Tree is now accessible to the mass of PETRONAS and this prepares the organisation to soar to a greater height in continuing subsea deepwater journey”, says En Izrie Ghazali. This effort will subsequently allow INSTEP, in collaboration with GTS, to give real life experience and exposure to subsea technology for the relevant PETRONAS staff and enhance their subsea capability.
