64 Primary School Students were appointed as new INSTEP’s Sustainability Agents through its Signature Planting Tomorrow: Edu-Lestari 2023

The morning sun of 11 September 2023 was greeted with excited smiles and enthusiastic cheers of 96 primary school students around INSTEP’s campus ground for its second edition of Signature Social Impact Management, Planting Tomorrow: Edu-Lestari 2023.

Incorporating the two focus areas under Yayasan PETRONAS aspirations namely; Powering Knowledge (Education) and Planting Tomorrow (Environment), Planting Tomorrow: Edu-Lestari aimed to produce Environment Sustainability Ambassadors among the primary school students involved. The programme involved 8 schools around INSTEP, covering two districts, which are Kuala Nerus and Setiu.

The programme participants were divided into two categories which are ‘Sustainability Agent’ and ‘Sustainability Ambassador’. 64 of the newly joined participants, are called Sustainability Agents, and 32 of the students who had involved in the last Edu-Lestari edition were already appointed as Sustainability Ambassadors.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, En. Idris Ibrahim mentioned in his speech, “Through our programme today, we expose the young minds of the students the importance and essence of environmental sustainability. In addition to planting trees activity, through the hands-on activities and sharing, we also impart the STEM related knowledge, to inculcate their interest in the field.”

The Sustainability Ambassadors were keen learning the methods for tree measurements.

The morning started off with hands-on activities for the students through the ‘Jom Tanam Pokok’ session. 32 Harumanis trees were provided for 64 of Sustainability Agents to get them working on the ground. In addition, a site visit was conducted for the 32 Sustainability Ambassadors to observe and measure the growth of the trees they planted last year.

To cool off after the hands-on activities, the students gathered in a hall for educational sharing on ‘Sustainability’, 3R concepts & Waste Classification​, which were made fun through two-way delivery by INSTEP Learning Consultancy Senior Manager, En. Muhammad Asri Omar.

“We hope that the appointed Environment Sustainability Ambassadors, will act as the voice to amplify our sustainable aspiration to reach wider communities, starting with their schoolmates, and their own families,” INSTEP General Manager of Learning Academy, En. Azhar Ahmad mentioned in his speech.

This programme adds to INSTEP’s sustainability commitments that include sustainable initiatives such as rainwater harvesting for internal use, a food composter to recycle food waste into fertilisers, and the installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and high mast lighting to reduce energy consumption.

INSTEP Supports New Energy Transition through Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project in Collaboration with Gentari

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has been active in promoting sustainability among its employees in endorsing support for PETRONAS’ sustainable aspiration, including the recent launch of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) project in collaboration with Gentari, the clean energy solutions entity owned by PETRONAS. The project started producing electricity in December last year and is anticipated to power up to 1 Megawatt (MW) of full capacity generation.

The 1.4MWp system is expected to generate 1,927.240 Megawatt Hour (MWh) of clean energy per annum, which amounts close to 30% of INSTEP’s overall energy requirement, effectively reducing 1285.47 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.

For further research and application purposes, INSTEP’s Solar PV 1 and 2 Project will furnish Gentari with valuable data and insights regarding its effectiveness and performance in Malaysia’s tropical environment. INSTEP has installed solar panels on the rooftops of several of its facilities, including academic and office buildings.

The Commercial Operation Launch event was hosted by the Gentari team at INSTEP on August 24, 2023, with the presence of Gentari’s Head of Renewable Energy (Malaysia and Southeast Asia), Mr Sy Malek Faisal Sy Mohamad, to officiate the ceremony. The event also served as an expression of gratitude to the project team from the Campus Asset Management Department at INSTEP, marked by a Focused Recognition presentation by the Gentari team. To add to the enjoyment of the event, a special electric vehicle (EV) was brought for test-drives.

Mr. Idris was all smiles during the EV car test drive brought by Gentari on the day of the event.

INSTEP, as the technical training arm of PETRONAS, exemplifies its dedication to delivering excellence in learning experiences by demonstrating its involvement in the solar PV project. The installation of a 5 (kilowatt) kW Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic (PV) system at the INSTEP Training Facility has been carried out by Gentari for educational purposes, including research, data analysis, and training activities.

In addition to that, INSTEP also provides a ground-mounted Solar PV facility under the Electrical Maintenance Workshop to upskill the technical workforce in supporting the energy transition to cleaner energy solutions.

“With achieving net zero carbon emission as our ultimate goal, the progress towards undergoing a just energy transition is also crucial. In PETRONAS’ transition to renewable energy and lower carbon businesses, INSTEP plays the role in retooling human capital equation through the delivery of sustainable technical learning solutions, to upskill and reskill our current and future workforces to help them adapt to new technologies and processes to develop new energy solutions,” Mr. Idris b Ibrahim, INSTEP Chief Executive Officer commented during the event.

Adding this project to INSTEP’s sustainability commitments, several of INSTEP’s own sustainable initiatives include rainwater harvesting for internal use, a food composter to recycle food waste into fertilizers, and the installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and high mast lighting to reduce energy consumption.

As part of MFT 50:30:0, INSTEP places a high priority on sustainable growth to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The launch of this project serves the purpose of supporting INSTEP’s role in becoming an active participant in the transition to cleaner energy sources.

First Café Mesra in Kuala Terengganu Established in INSTEP Students’ Centre

The first Café Mesra in Kuala Terengganu is established in INSTEP, which is also the third franchise established in East Coast. Café Mesra is an extension to PETRONAS Kedai Mesra with the core values of ‘down to earth’, and ‘no frills café’. With the tagline “Making your Everyday Life Simpler and Better”, Café Mesra embodies the Customer Focused belief.

The coffee and pastries now are available on sale at INSTEP Student Centre.

Now, INSTEP members can get their own cup of iced coffee to quench the caffeine thirst at the newly established Café Mesra at Student Centre, INSTEP.

The establishment of INSTEP Café Mesra is a collaboration between INSTEP Brand & Communication and Mesra Retail & Cafe Sdn Bhd (wholly owned by PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad). 

The INSTEP Student Center’s newly renovated appearance and the addition of an air-conditioned lounge made the grand opening particularly joyful. Sincere appreciation goes out to INSTEP Facilities Management and KLCCUH for facilitating this transition.

The launching of INSTEP Café Mesra was held on 14 May 2023 and officiated by En. Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer and En. Hafiz Suhaini, Café Mesra Franchise Manager.

By having Café Mesra in INSTEP, staff and learners’ welfare are guaranteed due to the easy access to diverse range of beverages and pastries. Additionally, this effort also will contribute to MFT 50:30:0, by helping Café Mesra to expand PETRONAS Non-Fuel Business (NFB) portfolio.

A Celebration with INSTEP’s Unsung Heroes

On 17 May 2023, an atmosphere of joy and warmth filled Dewan Sri Rhu, INSTEP, during a Meet and Greet Session of INSTEP CEO with its Learning Partners (LP). The event was conducted near the end of the Syawal month, celebrating both the festive and showing appreciation to the educators.

The foundation and heart of INSTEP are its Learning Partners (LP), who serve as the programmes’ instructors and trainers. The LP are made up of PETRONAS and industry retirees, as well as internal INSTEP instructors.

The event’s casual theme provided the trainers and INSTEP members with an opportunity to network and build relationships.

Prideful smiles and a sense of accomplishment were reflected on the attendees’ face.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Idris Ibrahim started off his speech with a warm wish of Teachers’ Day to the trainers, which was celebrated a day earlier, on 16 May 2023.

“The trainers are the educators for our energy workforce front liners. Though they are the educators, their job is never only to teach and educate. It encompasses a much broader and more profound role that extends beyond the boundaries of a traditional classroom. Essentially, they are the ones who bring money to PETRONAS,” commented Mr. Idris.

“In order to have the best people to run our plant safely and efficiently, firstly, we must have the best of the best educators, to impart the knowledge to our learners. And these are the people we are celebrating today,” he added.

Mr. Mogana Sundaram expressed his gratitude towards INSTEP management in his sharing.

Mr. Mogana Sundaram one of the trainers for Instrumentation trade for Multi Acceleration Programme (MAP), in his sharing mentioned how proud he is to serve as an educator in INSTEP. “I am very proud to be INSTEP member, as an instructor here. INSTEP as a world-class training centre is committed to ensuring the learners are provided with effective learning sessions, and we as instructors are equally dedicated to give our best in teaching.”

Mr. Roslan Jamaluddin shared his thoughts on the responsibility as an educator.

Mr. Ahmad bin Din, an instructor for Mechanical trade, recounted his responsibility as an educator. “This is one of the ways we are giving back to the community, by passing on our knowledge to the younger generations. The responsibilities to nurture the minds and technical skills the learners require for their future job are our utmost goal to accomplish.”

Though the event was only for a short time during a lunch break, it served its purpose, to bridge and connect the trainers with INSTEP management.

Engaging for Excellence: A Conversation with SVP PD&T, Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong

Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong, SVP PD&T, visited INSTEP on 14 May 2023, for an engagement with 376 students enrolled in the Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP). Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong took his time to share his knowledge and experience with the learners in the sharing session, with the theme of “Engaging for Excellence.”

Also present during the session was Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, Vice Chancellor and CEO of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).

The learners prepared a special performance to welcome Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong and the team, which also uplifted the mood of all audience, prior to kickstarting the sharing session.

The learners also took their chance to voice out their questions regarding career progression and goals and leadership tips towards the SVP. Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong shared his life journey from his humble beginning as a Sabahan boy, continuing through his development as a person till he attained the position of leader. “Having dreams that keep me awake helps me stay on track and concentrate on achieving my goals,” he said.

He also explained the essence of integrity, “Integrity is a way of life, which we hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethical behaviour and honesty. Make integrity as the anchor, that will be the priniciple in making any decisions for us, as a leader.”

Two of the most outstanding learners that exhibit exemplary PETRONAS Cultural Beliefs were chosen to be awarded with Focused Recognition from Dr. Azir Salleh, Senior Manager, Learning Experience INSTEP, presented by Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong during the event.

INSTEP as the training arm for PETRONAS, also plays the role as technology acceleration enabler, by being the facility testbed for new technology and pilot project. This includes the recent establishment of solar training facility in collaboration with Gentari and RotaPRO training in collaboration with GTS PD&T.

Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong, SVP PD&T, visited INSTEP on 14 May 2023, for an engagement with 376 students enrolled in the Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP). Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong took his time to share his knowledge and experience with the learners in the sharing session, with the theme of “Engaging for Excellence.”

Also present during the session was Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, Vice Chancellor and CEO of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).

The learners prepared a special performance to welcome Datuk Haji Bacho Pilong and the team, which also uplifted the mood of all audience, prior to kickstarting the sharing session.

From Papua New Guinea to INSTEP: Santos Limited Technicians Completed 10 Enriching Months Training in INSTEP

Recently INSTEP had celebrated the second batch of Apprentice Training Programme through a closing ceremony held at Sutra Beach Resort, Terengganu on 10 May 2023. The ceremony was graced with the presence of Manager Competency Based Training and Assessment, Santos Limited Mr. Jay Aquino and Production Manager Papua New Guinea, Mr. Grant James.

INSTEP had begun actively offering technical learning solutions to Santos Limited engineers and technicians through tailored training courses in 2018, and this has played a crucial role in technical capability development for the company, which formerly was also known as Oil Search Limited (OSL).

The 25 technicians completed their 10-month learning experience after BTEC International Level 2: Specialist Diploma for Technicians in Oil and Gas Facilities (Mechanical, Electrical, Process, Instrumentation) and BTEC International Level 3: Specialist Diploma in Engineering Operations in Oil and Gas Facilities (Mechanical, Electrical, Process, Instrumentation).

Mr. Grant James in his speech touched upon the significance of having solid technical learning fundamentals. “Success comes from people with solid fundamental. The fundamentals you lay will determine your level of skill throughout your capability development pathway.”

Ms. Rena Makep presented a PNG emblem as a token of appreciation to Head of Learning Academy, INSTEP, Mr. Azhar Ahmad.

Ms. Rena Makep in the trainees’ representative speech, expressed her appreciation for the warm welcome they received from the community during their ten-month stay at INSTEP. “During our time here, all of us truly had the most amazing experience. Every activity we engaged in, from picking up new technical knowledge to travelling across Terengganu and Malaysia, helped us to develop both our skill sets and personalities.”

The learners took the chance to let their talent shine through a performance during the event.

Despite the fact that some of the learners highlighted language issues as a difficulty they encountered while they were here, it did not dampen their enthusiasm or courage to interact with INSTEP members and the local community. One of the learners, Justin Kale, stated, “The instructors and locals here are so warm and friendly that we feel safe to just voice out our ideas without having to worry about conflicting opinions.”

This supports the message that INSTEP has been trying to relay to all of its members. Mr. Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP stated, “In order to promote diversity of view, we seek to establish a psychological safe zone in working and learning environments. This is necessary so that our learners can grow in the best environment.”
