Safeguarding the Gabonese learners’ safety during the pandemic outbreak, INSTEP readily converted all the face-to-face training programmes into Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT), which became the first ever VILT to be successfully delivered to international learners. Even with the absence of 2-month OJT, the learners were still able to understand the upstream and downstream system & operation via experiential learning at INSTEP’s Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP).

Being almost 10,000km away from their country, these 10 young Gabonese’s learning journey was a challenging one, having to adapt in a totally new environment, being far away from family and friends, and even enduring the COVID-19 pandemic situation. “INSTEP remains committed to its duty even despite the COVID-19 restrictions. We’re proud to be the first commission of Gabonese to come to INSTEP and we will bring these values back to our country,” the batch leader, Gildas Noila Moudouma appreciated the dedicated and committed INSTEP team, who worked round the clock to make sure the learners feel comfortable and safe within the campus.

(Left) Learners’ representative, Gildas Noila Moudouma thanked all parties in realising this customised training programme and vowed to contribute to his home country. (Right) Owing to the COVID-19 restriction, the certificate giving ceremony was live broadcasted to the audience from Malaysia and Gabon, together congratulating the learners’ perseverance in completing this 10-month customised training programme.

“We’re proud to have witnessed the completion of the first scholarship programme. After this, more Gabonese will be selected for this world-class opportunity at INSTEP and UTP,” exclaimed Mr. Meor Shahrin Mahmood, the Country Manager of PCGUSA. This is a true testament of PETRONAS’ Statement of Purpose, which PETRONAS continuously enriches the lives of Gabonese for their sustainable future.

Supporting PETRONAS’ growth agenda in the international arena, INSTEP is always passionate about progress in developing fit-for-future Gabonese workforce and benefitting PETRONAS’ undertakings in the country.

Technology again, proved its magic at times like this, by connecting both countries, separated by 7-hour time zone difference, to virtually witness this milestone.

Saying “NO!” to Carbon Footprint

Representatives from INSTEP, Group Procurement, Group Technical Services, and TNBES gathered together virtually to celebrate this major milestone achieved in SEE CAPEXLESS project.

Moving forward with a stronger commitment to sustainability, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and TNB Energy Services Sdn Bhd (TNBES) celebrated the official project completion and realisation of Smart Energy Efficiency (SEE) in line with achieving National Agenda overall emission reduction target, while catalysing PETRONAS Sustainability Development Agenda.

This business collaboration effort started from the initiative under Project Delivery and Technology (PD&T) MAGELLAN Project with the main objectives to reduce energy consumption and costs, as well as to contribute to reducing millions tonnes of carbon footprint in order to support National Agenda on climate change.

One of the focus areas is CAPEXLESS High Efficiency Equipment Upgrade. In close collaboration with Group Procurement (GP) and Group Technical Services (GTS), INSTEP is honoured to be chosen as the first pilot OPU in PETRONAS and also in the oil & gas industry for the SEE CAPEXLESS implementation.

“This initiative is in line with INSTEP’s commitment to PETRONAS Sustainability Development Agenda in safeguarding the environment, which features value creation and generates positive impact to our society,” reiterated INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim on INSTEP’s commitment to be a sustainability corroborator in transitioning into green agenda and sustainability space.

The handover of energy audit report which was taken place in Nov 2019, that oversaw the official operationalisation of SEE CAPEXLESS project between INSTEP and TNBES.

Following the Detailed Energy Efficiency Audit at INSTEP in Nov 2019, INSTEP has tapped into TNBES solutions by retrofitting light emitting diode (LED) lighting and high mast lighting in Non-Process Area such as administration, office buildings and street lighting at INSTEP. This collaboration enables INSTEP to save approximately 407,880 kWH per year of energy consumption, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 283 tonnes.

“This collaboration is seen as another significant collaboration between GLCs to boost efforts towards Energy Efficiency and accelerate the growth of Green Energy in Malaysia,” said TNBES Managing Director, Dr. Ir. Ahmad Jaafar Abd Hamid.

Apart from this, INSTEP also previously embarked on food composting, which is a reflection of “from food waste to resources”, and estimated to compost around 36.5 tonnes of food waste annually, contributing to greenhouse gases reduction that is equivalent to what 466 trees can absorb annually. INSTEP will continuously play its active role as the sustainability corroborator in creating sustainable values for all.

All the conventional lightings at 76 INSTEP buildings were replaced with LED lighting and high mast lighting, creating savings of approximately 407,880 kWH per year of energy consumption, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 283 tonnes.

“From Waste to Resources” – INSTEP Commitment towards Zero Food Waste

A group photo signifying the official launch of composter house at INSTEP.

Did you know that Malaysians produce 15,000 tonnes of food waste which is sufficient to feed 2.2 million people?

Committed to PETRONAS Sustainability Development Agenda and net zero carbon emission by 2050, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has stepped up to be the first to implement the food composting technology groupwide. Our role as the sustainability corroborator is to step out into green agenda and new energy with strong transition to sustainability space.

Food composting closes the loop of sustainability and helps us to achieve zero food waste. This reflects of how food waste is transformed into bio organic compost or fertiliser, which is then used for planting and greening the campus. With this food composting technology, INSTEP is estimated to compost around 15,000 kg of food waste annually, which will contribute to reduce greenhouse gases that are equivalent to what 6,000 trees can absorb annually.

(Left) Idris Ibrahim, PTTSB CEO, officiated INSTEP zero food waste commitment by putting the food waste into the food composter. (Right) The bio organic compost, which is the end product of the food waste, was then used as fertiliser for plant.

This idea was mooted when INSTEP initiated the first ever food composting event – “Grow Your Own Food” in November 2019, where MAEKO, the food waste specialist, was invited to give an awareness talk on sustainability and food waste. Strongly advocating PETRONAS sustainable development goals and “Safeguard the Environment” sustainability lens, the INSTEP team followed suit with series of discussions, which resulted to installation of an in-campus composter house.

The official launching of composter house on 19 Aug 2020 witnessed INSTEP commitment towards zero food waste. This significant milestone was celebrated by Idris Ibrahim, PTTSB Chief Executive Officer, Noor Suhailah Othman, Custodian, Environment and Social Performance of GHSSE, and Chelsea, MAEKO Chief Executive Officer.

“This initiative, which is the first in PETRONAS, features value creation, reduction of impact to the environment and generates positive impact to our society. This is a clear demonstration on applying sustainability lenses in the operationalisation of PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda,” quoted from Focused Recognition card given by Ungku Haslina, Senior General Manager, Environment & Social Performance of GHSSE to INSTEP team.

(Left) Noor Suhailah, Custodian, Environment & Social Performance, GHSSE shared about PETRONAS Sustainability Development Agenda and the current food waste statistics in PETRONAS. (Right) A token of appreciation was given from Idris Ibrahim (right) to Noor Suhailah (left).

Besides food composting, conversion of existing 6,000 units of conventional light bulbs to energy saving LED, and installation of solar farm in collaboration with GNE are part of INSTEP Sustainability Development Agenda this year 2020 as well.
