INSTEP Opens Door To Enriching Korean’s Lives

Embracing our Statement of Purpose – “A progressive energy and solutions partner enriching lives for a sustainable future”, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) achieves yet another milestone when INSTEP signed training agreement with Ulsan College Korea.

The signatories for the agreement were INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim and Ulsan College President, Dr. Heo Joengseok. The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between both parties signifies the start of strategic partnership and INSTEP commitment in accelerating competency development through providing experiential learning experience to develop local talents of Korea in giving assurance to their sustainable future.

Ulsan College is a private college, which is financially supported and owned by Hyundai Heavy Industries. Currently the college has collaborated with a few other local universities for internship programmes, and other technical training programmes, especially in the area of chemical engineering.

In delivering our value of ‘industry & technology driven technical learning solution’, INSTEP will play its vital role to collaborate with Ulsan College in developing human capital and customising a training programme, which is in line with the curriculum of Ulsan College. Starting from Jan 2020 onwards, batches of Korean students from Ulsan College will be sent to INSTEP for Chemical Process & Operation training programme. 

“We were very impressed with our last visit to INSTEP, and that’s why we trust INSTEP as our solutions partner in developing Ulsan College graduates. We are looking into a prolonged strategic partnership, not only on Chemical Process & Operation, but also on other trades as well,” exclaimed Ulsan College President, Dr. Heo Joengseok, who was also immensely interested in INSTEP internationally accredited training programmes by OPITO, BTEC and IECEx.

The success of this strategic partnership will open door to enriching the energy workforce in Korea because Ulsan College graduates are highly marketable in the chemical industry. INSTEP, with its high spirit of customer centricity, is progressively charting the journey forward for technical learning & certification, preparing fit-for-future workforce and enriching lives for a sustainable future.

INSTEP Won Localisation Award In Getenergy Global 2019

Embracing our Winning Aspiration – “A progressive solutions partner enriching energy workforce for a sustainable future”, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has once again added one more success story to our belt through winning the Localisation Award in the recent Getenergy Global 2019 for our relentless effort and contribution in supporting the local education and technical competency building.

The Getenergy Global 2019 is a major networking and business forum in which invited delegates discuss some of the major education, training and localisation issues facing the world’s energy industry. This event marks a major milestone, not only for the future of the training and education for the global oil, gas and energy workforce, but also how that workforce will shape the fast-changing energy business.

INSTEP CEO, Idris Ibrahim was one of the invited speakers to deliver his expertise and insights in the “Opening Summit: Understanding the Changing Role of National VS International Training in Meeting the Requirements of the Oil & Gas Industry” and “Workshop 7: Innovation in Skills Development”. Joining him were oil & gas industry experts from all around the world.

Winning the Localisation Award is a substantiation that INSTEP has been progressively contributing towards the human capital development and nationalisation of local talents. Among others, INSTEP is grateful of contributing towards the development of Garraf operations and nationalisation of local talents, enriching Iraqis’ lives for their sustainable future.

Besides, INSTEP built over 120 Omanis’ capability for O&M in new plants to realise Oman’s goals of developing Omanis own talents and becoming more self-reliant. Signing Of Training Agreement INSTEP Commitment To Enriching Bruneians’ Lives

14 September 2019 marks a major milestone achieved for both Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and Brunei Fertiliser Industries (BFI) at Empire Hotel and Country Club in Jerudong, Brunei. The state-owned BFI inked an agreement with INSTEP for the latter to accelerate Bruneians’ human capital development in supporting the operations and maintenance of Brunei’s new ammonia & urea plant. 

Present was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Brunei’s Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy. The agreement was signed by INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim, and BFI Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed S Baderkhan. This signing ceremony signifies the start of cooperation in the area of technical training and capability building for operations & maintenance of Brunei’s urea & ammonia plant. 

Operations and Maintenance Training Agreement was signed between INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim (second right), and BFI Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed S. Prior to this project coming onstream in 2021, 149 learners will undergo 6-month customised training programme in five trades, namely Operations, Laboratory, Mechanical (Static & Rotating), Electrical, and Instrumentation. Upon successful completion of the training programme, the learners will be awarded full-time employment with BFI before the company commences its operations.

BFI learners were excitedly anticipating to embark on their transformational learning experience at INSTEP starting from Oct 2019 onwards!

As part of Brunei’s effort to diversify economy through expanding value creation of the oil & gas industry, this project is one of the two largest downstream oil & gas projects in Brunei. Once operational, the plant will produce 2,200 tonnes of ammonia and 3,900 tonnes of urea every day using the large natural gas reserves to help create high-quality nitrogen fertiliser for export.

INSTEP Iraqi Learners Won Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards

Bright smiles beaming off everyone’s face upon receiving this honour on stage!

Reigning for the fourth time in a row, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has once again won the Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards 2019! This year, our relentless effort and delivery of BTEC qualifications saw two of our international learners winning Pearson BTEC Outstanding Learner Awards for the first time ever.

These two Iraqi learners, namely Mustafa Dheyaa Abdulkareem and Imad Farhan Sahib, hail from Production Operation Training Batch 4 (POT-4), who successfully completed their 6-month training at INSTEP and were among the first batch of POT to be conferred BTEC Certification. Out of all 79 learners from POT-4, they were chosen to be INSTEP representatives because of their high achievements in grades, vocational excellence, and other co-curricular activities. All their hard work and grit paid off when they were among the 18 BTEC winners after contending with other learners throughout Malaysia!

Mustafa accomplished his Pearson BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Diploma (SRF) Oil and Gas Technology (Production) with a distinction. As the group leader of POT-4, he proved his strong leadership qualities of courageous and ownership through representing POT-4 learners to contribute significantly in any engagement with INSTEP management. He also earned his respect through supporting the team closely whilst still enabling them to work independently, cultivating a high morale learning environment.

Imad attained overall distinction in Pearson BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Diploma (SRF) Oil and Gas Technology (Instrumentation). Being the class leader of Instrumentation, he smartly expressed his leadership quality through actively involving in INSTEP Iraqi student committee and often volunteering himself in any events. “Stay positive and be optimistic in achieving target by putting in 200% of hard work” is the principle that he upholds and lives by, which is a perfect demonstration of PETRONAS Cultural Belief “Results Matter”.

As of to date, INSTEP has produced more than 300 competent Iraqis for plant Operations & Maintenance, and these two learners are among those currently working in PETRONAS Carigali Iraq Holding B.V. in Iraq.

As the group leader of POT-4, he proved his strong leadership qualities of courageous and ownership through representing POT-4 learners to contribute significantly in any engagement with INSTEP management. He also earned his respect through supporting the team closely whilst still enabling them to work independently, cultivating a high morale learning environment.

Imad attained overall distinction in Pearson BTEC Level 2 Intermediate Diploma (SRF) Oil and Gas Technology (Instrumentation). Being the class leader of Instrumentation, he smartly expressed his leadership quality through actively involving in INSTEP Iraqi student committee and often volunteering himself in any events. “Stay positive and be optimistic in achieving target by putting in 200% of hard work” is the principle that he upholds and lives by, which is a perfect demonstration of PETRONAS Cultural Belief “Results Matter”.

Moments to be cherished signalling the commencement of a prolonged strategic partnership between INSTEP and INPG.

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has added Senegal to the map of its international presence, when both INSTEP and Institut National du Pétrole et du Gaz (INPG) entered into a strategic partnership, with six learners from the first cohort being sent to INSTEP for a 22-week customised on-the-job training as part of INPG Petroleum Engineering Master Programme.

INPG is established by the State of Senegal in 2017 to develop human capabilities and employment of the Senegalese in the oil & gas sectors especially in activities related to exploitations, production and management of resources.

Aguibou Ba, Executive Director of INPG emphasised the importance of on-the-job training.

“I believe in on-the-job training, and how the theories can be applied from powerpoint to power plant. INSTEP has an entire value chain that motivated me to send my people over for training.” Said Mr. Aguibou Ba, Executive Director of INPG.

This training programme will be conducted at INSTEP Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP), and live PETRONAS Plants. All learners are required to complete their master thesis based on the case study given during their attachment.

Embracing our value proposition of “Accelerating competency development through experiential learning”, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) once again welcomed 18 Iraqi learners from EJADA project, which is part of European Union’s Corporate Social Responsibility to elevate the competency of Iraqis in oil & gas industry.

This is our second year receiving EJADA learners, with five batches of learners being sent to undergo competency based training. This 30-month project supports the Iraqi government’s effort in enhancing vocational training for oil & gas sector with focus on technical and field-based jobs for non-university graduates. This will enhance the competency of new Iraqi staff, thereby improving the efficiency & safety of the industry, and reducing reliance on expatriate workers.

INSTEP, as a Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) approved training centre, offered the learners to undergo a 10-day BTEC Assessor Training & Certification Programme. They had to go through a 3-day intensive training workshop on competency assessment, followed by a competence portfolio with evidences of actual assessment on 2 learners for 2 approved units. At the end of this training programme, the candidates (as Assessors) who met the required BTEC quality standard will be awarded Edexcel Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (Q7000834). Prior to this batch, INSTEP has produced 2 batches of 35 EJADA learners, who have been successfully registered as BTEC workplace Assessors.

EJADA learners listened attentively to the introduction of Assessing Competencies on the Work Environment.

As an internationally accredited training centre, INSTEP has been entrusted to be the preferred technical learning solutions partner through preparing fit for future workforce, enriching lives for a sustainable future.

Through MTCP, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) becomes part of the commitment of the Malaysian Government in promoting technical cooperation among developing countries, strengthening regional & sub-regional cooperation, and nurturing collective self-reliance among developing countries. Since its inception in 1980, more than 33,000 participants from 144 recipient countries have benefited from various programmes offered by INSTEP.

Flying from the distant corners of the world, they were excited to embark on a transformational learning experience at INSTEP!

This time around, the basic training for Plant Operation programme was designed for learners who have minimal knowledge of plant operation and to provide industry specific knowledge and technical gap closure through exposure to upstream & downstream industries, and plant operations. Utilising face-to-face learning in classroom, hands-on training at practical workshops, and On-the-Job Training at Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP), INSTEP blended learning approach, coupled with its state-of-the-art facilities and certified instructors have provided learners with experiential learning to accelerate their competency development.

Besides enriching their technical knowledge, a series of exciting activities were lined up for them to embrace wholesome learning experience through having a taste of Malaysian’s local attractions and culture. During the weekends, they enjoyed a dip in the pristine water of Redang Island, swimming alongside schools of fish and turtles, immersing in the beauty of Terengganu. They were awed by the majestic PETRONAS Twin Towers and drowned in the city’s hustle and bustle.

INSTEP Progressively Produces the Right Talents of Tomorrow in Iraq

The long wait had finally come to an end when 93 excited Iraqis arrived at Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) on 4 August 2019, anticipating the transformational journey unravelling ahead of them.

The arrival of 93 Iraqis made the arrival hall of Sultan Mahmud Airport, Terengganu crowded!

These Iraqis are none other than the fifth batch of Production Operation Training (POT-5) which is one of PETRONAS’ talent capability development programmes to support Garraf operations in Iraq. Till date, INSTEP has produced competent workforce, comprising of more than 14,000 technicians and operators, including 291 Iraqis in four batches of POT, for plant Operation & Maintenance in more than 30 PETRONAS and non-PETRONAS plants.

Prior to their arrival, they underwent a 3-month PETRONAS Induction & Technical English Programme (PITEP) at Garraf Vocational Training Centre (GVTC) in Iraq. This programme, conducted by INSTEP, is an induction programme, aiming at inculcating PETRONAS purpose & values, providing technical English, and technical training required to deliver their future day-to-day work with PETRONAS.

Throughout the 3-month English training programme, INSTEP organised a Technical Invention & Innovation Exhibition (TIEX), showcasing 20 technical innovative inventions by the POT-5 learners. The learners had the opportunity to network and exchange views on their inventions with people across different countries. Approximately 100 working professionals from PETRONAS, Japan Exploration Petroleum Co. Ltd. (JAPEX) and Thiqar Oil Company (TOC) were amazed by their brilliant inventions, dialogues and presentations. This networking platform served as an ideal avenue in accelerating their competency development in terms of language proficiency, technical skills and exposure to PETRONAS core values.
