INSTEP Continues to Support Developing Countries through Knowledge Transfer

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) continues its commitment to support the growth of global talents of oil and gas industry through strategic collaboration with Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme since 2017. The supports are in the form of various expertise and knowledge sharing including championing oil and gas technical collaboration amongst developing countries.

 

The collaboration between MTCP and Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) continues this year as INSTEP recently hosted the 4th training session under MTCP, which this time around themed ‘Introduction to Petroleum Technology’.

 

The training sessions were carried out for 5 days via Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) which comprised virtual visit to INSTEP facilities, live demonstrations by our industry-experienced instructors, video offerings, professional coaching, and role-plays.

 

This session was attended by 20 participants from various countries, including Algeria (2), Cambodia (2), Jordan (2), Mexico (2), Morocco (1), Oman (2), Suriname (1), Thailand (1), and Uganda (4). Among these are Petroleum Engineer, Geologist, Environmental Affairs Specialist, HR office and so on.

 

The programmes offered the participants an overview of Oil & Gas Industry within Malaysia and enabled them to be familiarised with the industry operations & practices in Malaysia, which include the concepts of HSE elements, sustainability development, Upstream (geology, exploration, drilling, production, etc.), Downstream (refinery & petrochemical), as well as new energy initiatives in Malaysia. The highlight of the programme was the virtual visit to INSTEP Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP), which is a live training platform that re-creates the real-world plant scenarios and allow the learners to upskill their technical competency in day-to-day operation.

Mr. Abir B A Patah, the Plant Engineer at INSTEP took the participants a tour via live demo/telecast around the Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP).

One of the participants from Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), Lilian Nyakuni, said, “As a HR Professional in the Oil & Gas sector, the programme has given me a detailed insights of how and what our technical staff are going through in delivering their daily objectives and goals. After the programme, I know how to better support them and to create talent management strategies that are fit for our technical workforces like how INSTEP does.”

As a technical centre of excellence, INSTEP aspires to be a trusted and preferred technical learning solutions partner in the oil & gas industry and beyond. The collaboration with MTCP demonstrates INSTEP’s significant role in accelerating the human capital development not only within Malaysia, but also in the international horizon.

The Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) was officially launched on 7 September 1980 at the Commonwealth Heads of State Meeting in New Delhi, India, to signify Malaysia’s commitment to the South-South Cooperation, particularly the Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC). The MTCP emphasises on the development of human resources through the provision of trainings in various areas which are essential for a country’s development such as the public administration, good governance, health, education, agriculture, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, economy and finance, ICT and environment. Annually, Malaysia offered more than 65 capacity-building and technical assistance programmes under the MTCP, which have benefited more than 34,000 participants from 144 countries.

Third time bagging RoSPA Health and Safety – Gold Award!

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) is celebrating its third time of landing an internationally recognised award for demonstrating high health and safety standards.

“Receiving the Gold Award in The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Awards for year 2022 proves our dedication in adopting and implementing the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy within the organisation with a workplace concept that prioritises its employees’ experience as well as to ensure its employees, clients, and contractors get home safely to their familities at the end of every working day,” said Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP.

At INSTEP, we are dedicated to adopting and implementing the HSE Policy, Manuals & Procedures within the organisation. A dedicated HSSE steering committee and quarterly HSSE walkabouts set the right safety behaviour and culture among the employees so that everyone is align with the best HSE practice, and to strive for better achievement in Occupational Health and Safety management systems and culture.

74 Future Ready Technicians are Produced to Support Sarawak’s First Methanol Project

INSTEP hosted a closing ceremony of Technician Training Programme Batch 1 on 7 July 2022, signifying the remarkable achievement completed by the 74 learners from Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd throughout their 1-year training at INSTEP. This recorded a significant milestone in Sarawak’s aspiration to deliver the first mega-Methanol Project by 2024.

The auspicious ceremony was graced by the presence of the Director-in-Charge of Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd., YBhg. Datu Haji Abg Mohd Shibli B Haji Abg Mohd Nailie, the Project Director of Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd., Tuan Haji Mohammad B Haji Ibrahim, as well as Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, Tuan Haji Idris B Ibrahim.

YBhg. Datu Haji Abg Mohd Shibli, Director-in-charge of Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd. delivered his appreciation remarks during the closing ceremony.

“Today we witnessed the real translation of INSTEP’s dedication and commitment as a progressive solutions partner, who is passionate in building technical competencies and preparing the energy workforce for the bright future of the energy industry,” said YBhg. Datu Haji Abg Mohd Shibli as he delivered his remarks.

“The active collaboration and support that we receive from PETRONAS are paramount for us to progress into a petrochemical hub, especially through the strategic partnership with INSTEP who serves as a crucial partner and provides a meticulous package of essential skills and knowledge for our young technical personnel,” he added.

The successful completion of the 1-year training programme paved their ways to attachments at selected PETRONAS plants and facilities at East Malaysia for enhanced On Job Training (OJT), where their necessary capability readiness, knowledge, and attitude will be put to real test in order to deliver safe & reliable operations at Sarawak Methanol plant. This will further enrich the learners’ competencies as they will be exposed to the real environment of petrochemical plants in the oil & gas industry.

Idris B Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP delivered his closing remarks.

Idris commented, “The demand for highly qualified and well-trained workforce is high to ensure the ongoing operations are performed safely and efficiently. At INSTEP, we are committed to meet the demand and to provide a sustainable pipeline of highly competent workforce to the industry operations.”

Aswina Drusila Tony expressed her heartfelt gratitude as she represented her fellow colleagues to deliver her appreciation speech on the stage. She is one of the learners from the Analytical trade who had the opportunity to undergo OJT at PETRONAS Chemicals Olefin-Glycol Derivatives (PCOGD), before the end of learning journey at INSTEP.

“There is so much knowledge that we can gain out there, and our learning journey does not stop here. Upholding our aspiration of ‘One Team One Goal One Spirit, Building Legacy’, we are thirst for more gain and growth, and we will continue to strive for a better future for our family, the community, and our state,” said Aswina.

INSTEP Supports Global Talent Growth in HSE and Maintenance Management through MTCP

First session of Best Practices for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Maintenance Excellence in Oil & Gas Industry: 9-12 May 2022

Second session of Best Practices for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Maintenance Excellence in Oil & Gas Industry: 18-21 July 2022

Two sessions of Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) with theme ‘Best Practices for HSE and Maintenance Excellence in Oil & Gas Industry’ were hosted and completed by INSTEP this year, which received participants from various countries across the globe: Algeria, Botswana, Brunei, Ghana, Iran, Kiribati, Niger, Oman, Togo, and Uganda.

 

The training programmes are part of the collective effort by Malaysian Government to support growth of global talents in the oil & gas industry in developing countries. The supports are in the form of various expertise and knowledge sharing including championing oil and gas technical collaboration amongst developing countries.

 

Both training sessions were carried out for 4 days in May and July, respectively, via virtual learning approach: Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) guided by our industry-experienced instructors, which comprised live demonstrations, video offerings, professional coaching, and role-plays.

 

The training programme is designed to provide fundamental knowledge of maintenance philosophy and HSE practices in operating a safe and efficient plant. It focuses on the petroleum industry and maintenance practices in mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment in the oil & gas industry.

 

Tahirou Sanda Bagnou from Ministry of Petroleum, Energy & Renewable Energy, Niger, participated in the first session of the training programme. He said, “The Malaysian Government has provided the best platform, INSTEP, to provide us the knowledge and expertise sharing, allowing us to benefit and grow together in the oil and gas domain.”

 

Meanwhile, Kabelo Manyeula from Department of Energy Botswana said, “The course is important for us as the custodian of Botswana’s Petroleum Storage Depots. The maintenance practices and skills shared by INSTEP expertise for different equipment and facilities are not only useful for our future planning & budgeting, but it is also crucial for optimum operations which can effectively reduce/avoid loss time and injuries.”

 

INSTEP has recorded excellent health and safety performance with notable international accolade such as The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Gold Awards for 2020, 2021, and 2022 consecutively. Besides, INSTEP also received the Gold Class 1 Award by the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) for four years since 2019, which significantly remarks our HSE excellence throughout the years.

Zawawi Zaliah, the Principal Instructor (Rotating) of Maintenance Academy, INSTEP, introduced and explained on the rotating equipment in the workshop via live demonstration.

The MTCP emphasises on the development of human resources through the provision of trainings in various areas which are essential for a country’s development such as the public administration, good governance, health, education, agriculture, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, economy and finance, ICT and environment. Annually, Malaysia offered more than 65 capacity-building and technical assistance programmes under the MTCP, which have benefited more than 34,000 participants from 144 countries.

Second session of Best Practices for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Maintenance Excellence in Oil & Gas Industry: 18-21 July 2022

Two sessions of Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) with theme ‘Best Practices for HSE and Maintenance Excellence in Oil & Gas Industry’ were hosted and completed by INSTEP this year, which received participants from various countries across the globe: Algeria, Botswana, Brunei, Ghana, Iran, Kiribati, Niger, Oman, Togo, and Uganda.

 

The training programmes are part of the collective effort by Malaysian Government to support growth of global talents in the oil & gas industry in developing countries. The supports are in the form of various expertise and knowledge sharing including championing oil and gas technical collaboration amongst developing countries.

 

Both training sessions were carried out for 4 days in May and July, respectively, via virtual learning approach: Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) guided by our industry-experienced instructors, which comprised live demonstrations, video offerings, professional coaching, and role-plays.

 

The training programme is designed to provide fundamental knowledge of maintenance philosophy and HSE practices in operating a safe and efficient plant. It focuses on the petroleum industry and maintenance practices in mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment in the oil & gas industry.

 

Tahirou Sanda Bagnou from Ministry of Petroleum, Energy & Renewable Energy, Niger, participated in the first session of the training programme. He said, “The Malaysian Government has provided the best platform, INSTEP, to provide us the knowledge and expertise sharing, allowing us to benefit and grow together in the oil and gas domain.”

 

Meanwhile, Kabelo Manyeula from Department of Energy Botswana said, “The course is important for us as the custodian of Botswana’s Petroleum Storage Depots. The maintenance practices and skills shared by INSTEP expertise for different equipment and facilities are not only useful for our future planning & budgeting, but it is also crucial for optimum operations which can effectively reduce/avoid loss time and injuries.”

 

INSTEP has recorded excellent health and safety performance with notable international accolade such as The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Gold Awards for 2020, 2021, and 2022 consecutively. Besides, INSTEP also received the Gold Class 1 Award by the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) for four years since 2019, which significantly remarks our HSE excellence throughout the years.

Zawawi Zaliah, the Principal Instructor (Rotating) of Maintenance Academy, INSTEP, introduced and explained on the rotating equipment in the workshop via live demonstration.
