“From Waste to Resources” – INSTEP Commitment towards Zero Food Waste
A group photo signifying the official launch of composter house at INSTEP.
Did you know that Malaysians produce 15,000 tonnes of food waste which is sufficient to feed 2.2 million people?
Committed to PETRONAS Sustainability Development Agenda and net zero carbon emission by 2050, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has stepped up to be the first to implement the food composting technology groupwide. Our role as the sustainability corroborator is to step out into green agenda and new energy with strong transition to sustainability space.
Food composting closes the loop of sustainability and helps us to achieve zero food waste. This reflects of how food waste is transformed into bio organic compost or fertiliser, which is then used for planting and greening the campus. With this food composting technology, INSTEP is estimated to compost around 15,000 kg of food waste annually, which will contribute to reduce greenhouse gases that are equivalent to what 6,000 trees can absorb annually.
(Left) Idris Ibrahim, PTTSB CEO, officiated INSTEP zero food waste commitment by putting the food waste into the food composter. (Right) The bio organic compost, which is the end product of the food waste, was then used as fertiliser for plant.
This idea was mooted when INSTEP initiated the first ever food composting event – “Grow Your Own Food” in November 2019, where MAEKO, the food waste specialist, was invited to give an awareness talk on sustainability and food waste. Strongly advocating PETRONAS sustainable development goals and “Safeguard the Environment” sustainability lens, the INSTEP team followed suit with series of discussions, which resulted to installation of an in-campus composter house.
The official launching of composter house on 19 Aug 2020 witnessed INSTEP commitment towards zero food waste. This significant milestone was celebrated by Idris Ibrahim, PTTSB Chief Executive Officer, Noor Suhailah Othman, Custodian, Environment and Social Performance of GHSSE, and Chelsea, MAEKO Chief Executive Officer.
“This initiative, which is the first in PETRONAS, features value creation, reduction of impact to the environment and generates positive impact to our society. This is a clear demonstration on applying sustainability lenses in the operationalisation of PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda,” quoted from Focused Recognition card given by Ungku Haslina, Senior General Manager, Environment & Social Performance of GHSSE to INSTEP team.
(Left) Noor Suhailah, Custodian, Environment & Social Performance, GHSSE shared about PETRONAS Sustainability Development Agenda and the current food waste statistics in PETRONAS. (Right) A token of appreciation was given from Idris Ibrahim (right) to Noor Suhailah (left).
Besides food composting, conversion of existing 6,000 units of conventional light bulbs to energy saving LED, and installation of solar farm in collaboration with GNE are part of INSTEP Sustainability Development Agenda this year 2020 as well.

INSTEP Commitment to Supporting the First Refrigerated LPG Terminal in SEA
The first strategic partnership between Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and Global Petro Storage (GPS) Klang Terminal was realised when 15 learners were gathered on 9 August 2020, celebrating the commencement of GPS LPG, Storage & Terminal Technician Training Programme.
Earlier in March 2020, GPS Klang Terminal, the leader in independent storage and logistics, inked an agreement with INSTEP for the latter to accelerate the competency development of Storage and Terminal technicians in supporting the first independent refrigerated LPG terminal in Southeast Asia.
Prior to this project coming onstream in early 2021, 15 learners will undergo the customised training programme from August to December 2020. Upon completion, the technicians will join the terminal operations, which has a capacity of 134,400 cubic meters, comprising of 2 refrigerated tanks and 4 pressurised bullets.
“INSTEP has the required world-class facilities, people and resources, and was even heavily involved in the selection of trainees to be enrolled in this training programme,” said Mr. Ahmad Nainy Mokhtar, GPS Klang Terminal Director.
Aspiring to be a progressive solutions partner enriching energy workforce for a sustainable future, INSTEP is passionate about progress in transforming learning experience, supporting our customers and learners in realising “what could be” to “what is.”

INSTEP As Technology Acceleration Enabler in PETRONAS 5G Project
Supporting PETRONAS growth strategy into digitalisation space, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has always supported the research & development of latest industry & technology solutions in the energy industry by capitalising on our world-class facilities and experienced industry experts.
Working hand-in-hand with Project Delivery & Technology (PD&T) team and PETRONAS Research Sdn. Bhd. (PRSB), INSTEP is honoured to be the first testing facility for 5G deployment in oil & gas industry through the 3-month feasibility study on remote controlling and monitoring of INSTEP’s Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) Water System from PRSB via fibre optic, coupled with CCTVs, drones, head mounted, and AnyMal (platform robot). 5G project is one of PETRONAS oil & gas transformation and digitalisation initiative aiming to improve operation & production, implement remote monitoring and diagnostic, and improve workers’ safety and security.
INSTEP’s world-class facilities, in particular, UDTP, being the first-of-its-kind in the world, simulates real plant experiential learning to generate job-ready engineers & technicians. The real-world simulation of Upstream and Downstream plant scenarios in a safe environment has made UDTP a suitable testbed to test and pilot new & innovative technology deployment in safe operating conditions before the full commercial application. INSTEP is forever ready to support and accelerate PETRONAS Technology Readiness assessment by actively stepping up to play our role as the Technology Acceleration Enabler.
