Supporting PETRONAS Growth Agenda, INSTEP Enriches Gabonese’s Lives

Posted date: 16 December 2019

Committed to being a solutions partner to talents in the energy industry and beyond, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) supports PETRONAS growth agenda in Gabon through accelerating competency development by providing experiential learning, supported by customised and industry-and-technology-driven learning solutions to develop fit-for-future Gabonese workforce, benefitting PETRONAS’ undertakings in the country. This significant milestone is witnessed when INSTEP signed training agreement with PETRONAS Carigali Gabon Upstream S.A (PCGUSA) towards realising one-year customised training programme for Gabonese learners.

The signatories for the agreement were INSTEP Head of Marketing & Sales, Mr. M Asri Omar and Country Manager of PCGUSA, Mr. Meor Shahrin Mahmood. The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between both parties signifies the start of strategic partnership and INSTEP commitment as PETRONAS’ technical training arm in accelerating technical competency of Gabon’s local talents.

Gabon Ministry of Petroleum and PCGUSA were impressed by the facilities at INSTEP.

In strengthening presence in Gabon, PETRONAS signed an agreement for two additional exploration permits and is the first company to sign an exploration and production contract in Gabon in five years. Gabon is seen as one of the key basins and countries in the global exploration portfolio, with large potential in deepwater area waiting to be unlocked. This venture signifies PETRONAS’ first ultra deepwater well, pioneering in exploration of pre-salt plays. The sweet success of this long-term partnership came when PCGUSA made a discovery in Block F14 (Likuale).

“PETRONAS is like a citizen company in Gabon, which helps to develop the local talents,” said Mr. Davy Thome Mboumba, Training Advisor, Gabon Ministry of Petroleum. He expressed his trust in INSTEP’s capability in delivering quality training programmes, and expected to see the Gabonese learners contribute significantly to Gabon and PETRONAS.

As part of Production Sharing Contract commitment between PETRONAS and Gabonese government, 18 Gabonese learners from Directorate General of Hydrocarbons have been awarded scholarships to attend a one-year customised training programme, starting from Dec 2019. This programme comprises of 3-month English Communications, 3-month English Technical, 4-month Technical & Non-Technical, and 2-month On-the-Job Training. The training curriculum is customised according to the learners’ backgrounds, e.g.: engineering, geology, economy, and others.

“INSTEP is the perfect place to accelerate Gabonese’s human capital and in the coming five years, we expect to see more Gabonese working in the organisation, bringing back the wealth of knowledge, and applying it for the benefit of the industry and country,” exclaimed Mr. Meor, who is enthusiastically exploring the potential opportunity of sponsoring Gabonese for Degree or Masters programme.

Thumbs up for the start of this strategic partnership in enriching Gabonese’s lives for their sustainable future. Kudos to all who have put in tremendous effort in realising this!

This strategic partnership is a clear demonstration of Shared Success between PCGUSA, UTP and INSTEP, who come together as one PETRONAS, in transforming “what could be” to “what is.” Advocating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4.0 (ensures inclusive and equitable quality education while promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all), INSTEP will continue supporting in developing technical competency, preparing fit-for-future workforce and enriching lives for a sustainable future.
