“You are the man of the present and the future. You are the man who will build the country and the people.” The first two sentences of a speech by Mr. Kareem Jabbar Atya, Head of Garraf Commission, Thi Qar Oil Company (TOC), echoed strongly amongst the 93 Iraqis who filled up most of the hall. Sense of pride crawling across their faces, adrenaline pumping and excitement hovering across the hall as all of them listened enthusiastically to him.

Arriving 6 months ago from a country 7,000 km away from Malaysia, the 5th batch of Production Operation Training (POT-5) welcomed the graduation of their second phase training programme on 16 January 2020. As part of PETRONAS’ talent capability development in Garraf operations, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has trained over 300 Iraqis in 5 consecutive batches to date.

(Left) Mr. Idris Ibrahim, INSTEP CEO, iterated the importance of "Passionate about Progress" – today is better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today. (Right) Mr. Sohaime Bin Abdullah, PCIHBV Head of Garraf Operations, delivered a powerful speech on developing the capability of the local talents in Iraq.

The Iraqi learners first underwent a 3-month Technical Intensive English Programme (TIEP) at Garraf Vocational Training Centre (GVTC) where they were equipped with technical English and communication skills. Upon completion, they continued with the second phase, the 6-month Technical Programme at INSTEP that provided them with the knowledge and skills required in their particular disciplines. The successful completion of the second phase will pave way to 6-month On-the-Job Training (OJT) at Garraf operations where their necessary capability readiness, skills, knowledge and attitude will be put to test in order to deliver their future day-to-day work with PETRONAS’ operations in Iraqi.

“Today, we witness the real translation of PETRONAS Statement of Purpose, where we play our role in supporting our partners, not only to PCIHBV, but also to the people of Iraq.” Mr. Idris Bin Ibrahim, INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, emphasised that the knowledge gained will generate tremendous values, which in turn will enrich the local people in Iraq. “Be proud to be one of more than 14,000 INSTEP alumni. These people, including you, are the proud fruits of the line of INSTEP instructors and staff who put their heart and soul in designing fit for purpose niche programmes.”

(Left) Mr. Kareem Jabbar Atya, TOC Head of Garraf Commission, was very proud of the 93 Iraqis and urged all of them to appreciate this opportunity and gain as much international experience as possible. (Right) Token of appreciation was presented to Mr. Yahya Shanan, who demonstrated quality leadership skills during his tenure as the POT-5 Batch Leader.

Complemented with world-class training facilities, and industry-experienced & qualified instructors, the POT-5 training programme was specifically designed to incorporate Competency Based Assessment (CBA) Subject and Non-CBA Subject. The CBA Subject was assessed based on 80% BTEC requirements and 20% learners’ personal report, while the Non-CBA Subject was assessed based on 40% final examination and 60% coursework.

“PETRONAS is the only oil & gas company in Asia that provides live simulation through INSTEP’s Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) as part of technical capability programme for technicians and operators, which provides the opportunity to upskill your skills at an international level,” proclaimed by Mr. Sohaime Bin Abdullah, Head of Garraf Operations, PETRONAS Carigali Iraq Holdings B.V (PCIHBV) who was grateful to see the learners’ progress in technical learning, soft skills and English communications, while iterating the importance of these graduates being the role models for the other Iraqis.

One step closer to the finish line, Mr. Yahya Shanan, POT-5 Batch Leader rallied his fellow brothers to “step up to our responsibility, let us progressively develop our scientific and practical skills, as well as our attitude and manners, to become a better person and contribute back to PETRONAS, and our country, Iraq.” Speaking orotundly, he expressed his utmost appreciation to everyone who has helped them overcoming the challenges and shaping them to become better persons.

Currently, all 93 Iraqis have returned safely to their hometown and embarked the last chapter of their training journey before joining the big PETRONAS family and creating values to their country.
