INSTEP Welcomes Deputy Minister of Education & Innovation Sarawak and Sarawak Petchem Delegates

On 16 March, INSTEP hosted a ceremonial event which aims to strengthen strategic partnership with Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd. through campus visit and effective engagement sessions with the learners.

The event was graced by the presence of the Deputy Minister of Education & Innovation Sarawak, YB Dr Hj Annuar Bin Rapaee, Chairman of Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd., Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hj Abdul Aziz Bin Dato Hj Husain, and Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, Idris Bin Ibrahim.

Also presented in the event were Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd. Board of Directors & their delegates, Centre of Technical Excellence (CENTEXS), Sarawak Skills, PETRONAS Sarawak, PETRONAS Terengganu, and PETRONAS Government Regulator Advisory.

The event included a gallery walk at INSTEP Hall of Fame (HOF) and a brief campus tour, during which the delegates were able to witness the facilities at the state-of-the-art training centre at Batu Rakit, Terengganu.

‘Experiencing is Enriching’, the delegates and visitors experienced an enriching visit during the Hall of Fame (HOF) gallery walk.

YB Dr Hj Annuar said he was impressed with all the facilities in place after the campus tour. “Human capital development is the key driver in realising our State’s aspiration to be a developed region by 2030. We must leverage strategic collaborations or joint ventures to support our industry in providing job-ready skilled workforce for our Sarawak Petrochemical Hub.”

“The Technician Training Programme (TTP) at INSTEP will indefinitely benefit the technical competency development in Sarawak,” he added.

Deputy Minister penned down his experience with INSTEP.

Idris said during his welcoming remarks, “We are honoured to be the preferred solutions partner of Sarawak Petchem in empowering the young talents’ competency and capability to support the successful delivery of the Sarawak Methanol Project by 2024.”

Further adding that, “We are committed to help facilitate Sarawak’s aspiration for their first mega methanol project in preparing fit-for-future workforce. Our technical training programme customised with experiential hands-on learning at our live training plant UDTP (Upstream Downstream Training Plant) are able to provide access to technical education for local communities and to support the sustainable pipeline of technical talents in Malaysia.”

Tan Sri Datuk Amar in his appreciation remarks commended the significance of this collaboration as a milestone in delivering the mega project, “Technical expertise and capability development are fundamentals for our young generation to discharge their obligations. I applaud INSTEP for their commitment towards supporting Sarawak Petchem in delivering the landmark methanol project, in line with our ‘One Team One Goal One Spirit, Building Legacy’ aspiration.”

Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hj Abdul Aziz penned down his engagement experience with INSTEP.

Through this collaboration, a total of 116 young Sarawak talents have started the Bridging Programme at INSTEP called Technician Training Programme (TTP), starting August 2021. The training programme is customised in the areas of operations, analytical, instrumentation, and electrical.  

This collaboration is a significant milestone in the long-standing collaboration between PETRONAS and Sarawak Government in the growth of downstream petrochemical sector in Sarawak. In 2018, PETRONAS Chemicals Marketing (Labuan) Ltd. became Sarawak Petchem’s partner to market methanol products for the project.

Later in 2021, PETRONAS Global Technical Solutions Sdn. Bhd. (PGTSSB) has entered into an agreement with Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd. to provide advisory and technical support services for the project.

PETRONAS through its technical training arm, INSTEP will play its vital role in developing human capital to operate their assets in Sarawak. Through this strategic partnership, INSTEP, as a progressive solutions partner, is committed in accelerating competency development through experiential learning to prepare competent workforce, enriching lives for a sustainable future.

Established in June 2017, Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd. is the first company in the state that produces methanol, with an annual capacity of 1.7 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa). Its plant in Bintulu is currently under construction.
