Celebration of Success: Senegalese young talents to be future-ready

Posted date: 24 February 2022

“We did it!”, exclaimed with excitement by the Senegalese young talents as they celebrated the completion of their 22-week customised On-the-Job Training at Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP).

The learners underwent 6 months of training with blended virtual and physical training scheme, including 2 months of theoretical classroom activities via Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT), and 4 months of practical learning comprising hands-on at practical workshop & experiential learning at Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP). Upon completion of training, they underwent On-Job training at real PETRONAS plants such as TCOT (Terengganu Crude Oil Terminal) and OGT (Onshore Gas Terminal).

With travel restrictions and safety concerns being top of mind during the pandemic, INSTEP proactively implemented necessary safety measures and actions to ensure the technical competency of the learners are effectively supported while prioritising their health and well-being in the campus.

“INSTEP has provided the necessary facilities and hospitable treatment to make our learners feel at home, although they are 8,000 miles away from Senegal. It has been an adventure and a sacrifice to make (leaving family & home), but I believe this programme is a key milestone worth experiencing in their career pathway towards success in a challenging industry.” said Mr. Aguibou Ba, Executive Director of Institut National du Pétrole et du Gaz (INPG), Senegal.

“We thank INSTEP for the support during these 6 months and we look forward to continuing our strategic partnership,” he added.

Mr. Aguibou Ba, General Director of INPG, who joined the ceremony virtually, applauded INSTEP for their capability, courage, and progressiveness in accelerating competency of current and future technical talents for both local and international oil & gas industry.

INSTEP’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Idris Ibrahim stressed the importance of strategic partnership between INSTEP and Senegal, by implanting the element of experiential learning at UDTP which not only allows the learners to apply theories into practice in a non-hazardous environment, but also equips them with the competency required to perform activities in real plants later.

“Being a key partner in PETRONAS’s growth for the past 40 decades, INSTEP is passionate in pushing boundaries in accelerating competency development in the energy industry and beyond. Our training programmes are designed to provide blended learning approach, where the lesson learnt from theoretical and experiential learning are required to shape you into the future leaders of Senegal energy industry, “said Mr. Idris.

Despite the differences in cultural backgrounds, the learners have built good relationships and engagements with other students and staff in the campus. They enjoyed the social activities in the evening after training such as futsal, volleyball, and badminton.

Mr. Momath Kéba Diop, representing the Senegalese learners, said during the ceremony, “INSTEP’s Customised On-the-Job Training is indeed a passport to employment in the oil & gas industry, as it provided accelerated competency development through comprehensive learning approach. Armed with the essential technical skills and knowledge we’ve gained, we are eager to play our roles in contributing to the development of our country’s energy sectors as well as economic development.”

Mr. Momath Kéba Diop delivered his appreciation speech during the closing ceremony.

A total of 8 Senegalese students from different backgrounds including Geoscience, Process Engineering, and Electromechanical Engineering, specialising in Petroleum Engineering in INPG Masters Programme, underwent the On-the-Job Training as part of their internship. INSTEP customised the 22-week programme and provided a conducive learning environment for the learners, including a comprehensive learning approach of theoretical & experiential hands-on training, as well as a variety of student services and facilities to help them cultivate work-life balance.
