64 Primary School Students were appointed as new INSTEP’s Sustainability Agents through its Signature Planting Tomorrow: Edu-Lestari 2023

The morning sun of 11 September 2023 was greeted with excited smiles and enthusiastic cheers of 96 primary school students around INSTEP’s campus ground for its second edition of Signature Social Impact Management, Planting Tomorrow: Edu-Lestari 2023.

Incorporating the two focus areas under Yayasan PETRONAS aspirations namely; Powering Knowledge (Education) and Planting Tomorrow (Environment), Planting Tomorrow: Edu-Lestari aimed to produce Environment Sustainability Ambassadors among the primary school students involved. The programme involved 8 schools around INSTEP, covering two districts, which are Kuala Nerus and Setiu.

The programme participants were divided into two categories which are ‘Sustainability Agent’ and ‘Sustainability Ambassador’. 64 of the newly joined participants, are called Sustainability Agents, and 32 of the students who had involved in the last Edu-Lestari edition were already appointed as Sustainability Ambassadors.

 En. Idris Ibrahim delivered his speech during the event.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, En. Idris Ibrahim mentioned in his speech, “Through our programme today, we expose the young minds of the students the importance and essence of environmental sustainability. In addition to planting trees activity, through the hands-on activities and sharing, we also impart the STEM related knowledge, to inculcate their interest in the field.”

The Sustainability Ambassadors were keen learning the methods for tree measurements.

The morning started off with hands-on activities for the students through the ‘Jom Tanam Pokok’ session. 32 Harumanis trees were provided for 64 of Sustainability Agents to get them working on the ground. In addition, a site visit was conducted for the 32 Sustainability Ambassadors to observe and measure the growth of the trees they planted last year.

To cool off after the hands-on activities, the students gathered in a hall for educational sharing on ‘Sustainability’, 3R concepts & Waste Classification​, which were made fun through two-way delivery by INSTEP Learning Consultancy Senior Manager, En. Muhammad Asri Omar.

INSTEP General Manager of Learning Academy, En. Azhar Ahmad delivered the closing speech for the event.

“We hope that the appointed Environment Sustainability Ambassadors, will act as the voice to amplify our sustainable aspiration to reach wider communities, starting with their schoolmates, and their own families,” INSTEP General Manager of Learning Academy, En. Azhar Ahmad mentioned in his speech.

This programme adds to INSTEP’s sustainability commitments that include sustainable initiatives such as rainwater harvesting for internal use, a food composter to recycle food waste into fertilisers, and the installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and high mast lighting to reduce energy consumption.
